Fetishes & Talens: A Player's Guide

You have claws. You have the gift of shapes. You can run faster than any car through these Anchorage streets. But some fights need more than muscle, and some hunts call for tools that carry the spirit world inside them.

That is what fetishes and talens are. They are objects β€” a knife, a compass, a bottle of brine, a little carved doll β€” that hold spiritual power trapped inside them. They can do things that no ordinary object can do. And making them, or earning them, is one of the most important skills a werewolf can learn.

This guide will follow a werewolf named Pacey, an Ithaeur of the Forsaken, as she figures out how all of this works.

🐺 Elder Mara Ashcroft, Blood Talon Ithaeur:
"I have been making fetishes since before your pack's youngest member was born. The first thing I tell every young moon-caller is this: a fetish is not a weapon you pick up off the ground. It is a relationship. It is a promise. It is a cage, yes β€” but even a cage has two sides. Learn that early, or learn it the hard way."

Fetishes

A fetish is a physical object β€” a weapon, a piece of jewelry, a tool, a vehicle β€” that has a spirit trapped inside it permanently. The spirit's power becomes the fetish's power. The fetish can be used over and over again, as long as you know how to wake up the spirit inside.

Fetishes are rare. Fetishes are valuable. Packs guard them carefully, and giving one as a gift is a big deal. Some fetishes have been passed down through packs for generations, collecting history and meaning along the way.

Talens

A talen is also an object that holds spiritual power. But instead of a full spirit being trapped inside, a talen holds only a piece of a spirit's energy β€” like a battery charged up with spirit power. Once you use that power, it is gone. Talens are single-use items.

Talens are more common than fetishes, and packs often trade them with each other or collect them as tribute from spirits in their territory. Think of them as spiritual tools you can carry in your pocket.

Pacey's First Lesson. One night, after a hunt near Earthquake Park, the pack's elder drops a small carved compass on the table. "This is a fetish," the elder says. "It finds spirits hiding nearby. We've had it thirty years. Don't lose it." Then the elder hands Pacey a little glass bottle sealed with wax. "That's a talen. Fire spirit energy inside. Use it once when you need a burst of heat. Then it's done." Pacey holds both. Both feel alive in her hands β€” that warm, buzzing feeling any werewolf gets when they touch something spiritually charged. But the compass feels deep, like a river. The bottle feels bright, like a match.

How Fetishes Work

Dot Ratings

Every fetish has a rating from one dot (●○○○○) to five dots (●●●●●). This rating tells you two things: how powerful the spirit trapped inside is, and how strong the fetish's power is.

Rating

Spirit Rank

What It Can Do

●○○○○

Rank 1

Small bonuses. Simple tricks. A padlock that destroys lockpicks. A necklace that sends a howl to your pack.

●●○○○

Rank 2

Real combat bonuses. Useful advantages. A weapon that leaves extra damage on its first hit.

●●●○○

Rank 3

Serious power. A car that runs silent. A knife that can strike spirits in Twilight.

●●●●○

Rank 4

Strong and broad. A weapon that can cut limbs clean off. A mask that protects against spirit powers.

●●●●●

Rank 5

Legendary. Weapons that cut Willpower as well as flesh. Powers that break the normal rules.

Using a Fetish

Waking up the spirit inside a fetish takes effort. The spirit does not always want to cooperate. To activate a fetish, your character rolls Resolve + Composure, with a penalty equal to the fetish's dot rating. That means a one-dot fetish is fairly easy to wake up, while a five-dot fetish is a real challenge.

You can skip the roll entirely by spending a point of Essence instead. The spirit cannot resist that β€” Essence is its food, and offering it some gets immediate cooperation.

Activating a Fetish

Roll: Resolve + Composure

Penalty: Subtract the fetish's dot rating from your dice pool

Alternative: Spend 1 Essence to activate without rolling

Pacey Uses the Spirit Compass. The pack is hunting a spirit making trouble in Fairview. Pacey holds the spirit-finding compass β€” a two-dot fetish β€” and rolls Resolve + Composure, minus 2. She gets enough successes. The needle spins, then locks north. The spirit is two blocks away, hiding in the shadow of a utility box. Later, in a fight, she has no time to roll. She spends 1 Essence. The compass wakes up instantly.

How Talens Work

Talens work differently from fetishes, and in many ways they are simpler. You do not need to roll anything to use a talen. You just activate it β€” and it works.

Most talens contain the power of one spiritual ability. That might be a Facet (a Gift-like power from a spirit) or an Influence (a spirit's ability to affect the physical world). When you use a talen, you can use that power as if it were your own, substituting the talen's dot rating for whatever would normally matter.

After one use, the talen is spent. The object might crumble, shatter, lose its warmth, or just feel empty. It is done.

Activating a Talen

No roll required. Just activate it.

Influences take one instant action. Facets are instant or reflexive as listed.

After one use, the talen is spent forever.

Pacey Uses a Storm Coil. Pacey's pack needs to cut power to a building to stop a Pure werewolf calling for backup. She holds a Storm Coil β€” a three-dot talen holding electricity spirit power β€” against the building's power box and activates it. No roll. A surge of spirit electricity blows through the system. The building goes dark. The Storm Coil crumbles to rust in her hand. Gone.

Creating a Fetish

Making a fetish is one of the hardest and most important things an Ithaeur can do. It is not quick, and it is not simple. But it is a skill that sets the People apart from the spirits they hunt.

To create a fetish, you use the Fetish Rite β€” a powerful rite that binds a spirit into a physical object. Here is how the process works, step by step.

🐺 Elder Mara: "The Fetish Rite is a powerful rite. That means it is serious magic. Do not try it alone the first time. Do not try it with a spirit you have not at least spoken to. And for Luna's sake, do not try it with a spirit that hates you. I have seen what happens when a spirit of that power escapes mid-binding. We do not talk about that night."

Step 1: Find the Right Spirit

The spirit you bind becomes the fetish's power. A fire spirit makes a fetish that does fire things. A spirit of stealth makes a fetish that helps you hide. A spirit of technology can be bound into a phone or a car.

The spirit's Rank must match the fetish's dot rating you want. A Rank 2 spirit makes a two-dot fetish. You cannot skip levels.

You have two options:

  • Negotiate: Some spirits will agree to enter a fetish in exchange for something β€” protection, a promise, regular Essence feedings, or a time limit on their service. A willing spirit is safer and the fetish is more stable.
  • Force it: You can hunt a spirit down, beat it, and chain it into the object against its will. This works, but it is risky. A forced spirit will eventually break free β€” especially if you keep feeding it Essence. Spirits in your territory will also notice how you treat their kind.
🐺 Elder Mara on forcing spirits: "You can force a spirit into a fetish. The rite allows it. But know what you are doing. That spirit is angry. Every time you pour Essence into it to make it work, you are feeding the thing that wants to escape. Some old fetishes β€” the ones that were forced centuries ago β€” you can feel the rage inside them. They work, but they want to be free. Handle those carefully. And if you make a habit of forcing spirits in your territory? The other spirits notice. They remember. The Shadow has a long memory."

Step 2: Prepare the Vessel

The object you choose matters. The vessel should fit the spirit's nature. You would not bind a fire spirit into a block of ice. A spirit of the hunt might go into a knife, a tracker's compass, or a set of boots. A spirit of storms might go into a lantern, a radio antenna, or a copper coil.

The object should also feel symbolic β€” meaningful in some way to what the spirit represents. This is not just flavor. The symbols matter to the rite.

Step 3: Perform the Fetish Rite

The Fetish Rite requires someone who knows it β€” usually an Ithaeur, but any werewolf who has learned the rite can perform it. It costs 1 Essence per dot of the fetish being created, and it takes a long time: an extended ritual needing 20 successes, each roll representing one minute of work.

Old packs have their own traditions for how this looks:

  • Iron Masters in industrial neighborhoods often do it over a forge, hammering the object while chanting and spilling blood on the hot metal.
  • Bone Shadows might draw spirit-language sigils around the object and speak to the spirit in the First Tongue until it submits.
  • Storm Lords sometimes bind spirits in storms, using lightning and wind as part of the ceremony.

The Fetish Rite β€” Mechanics

Rite Rating: Four dots (you must know this rite to perform it)

Cost: 1 Essence per dot of the fetish being created

Action: Extended β€” 20 successes needed; each roll = 1 minute

Requirement: The spirit must be present and either willing or physically restrained

Step 4: The Fetish Is Born

When the rite succeeds, the spirit is inside the object. The fetish is done. You can feel the difference immediately β€” the object has weight to it now, in the spiritual sense. It hums. From this point on, the fetish can be used as described in the previous section.

Pacey's First Fetish, Step by Step.

Pacey has been talking to a small earth spirit that lives near Earthquake Park. It is a Rank 1 spirit β€” young, curious, and willing to make a deal. She wants to bind it into a compass to help find hidden spirits.

Step 1 β€” The Deal: She meets the spirit in the Shadow. She offers six months of service in exchange for a year inside the fetish, with regular Essence feedings. The spirit agrees. It is a willing binding.

Step 2 β€” The Vessel: She finds an old brass compass from a junk shop in Spenard. Earth spirits like old things, solid things. She carves a glyph of finding on the back with her claw.

Step 3 β€” The Rite: She performs the Fetish Rite at the park, at the spot where the spirit lives. It is a one-dot fetish, so she spends 1 Essence. She rolls, working through the rite over about twenty minutes. She gets 20 successes. The compass shudders in her hand.

Step 4 β€” Done: The compass is now a fetish. When Pacey activates it, the needle points toward any spirit within range. She can feel the earth spirit inside β€” patient, heavy, waiting.

Creating a Talen

Talens are easier to create than fetishes, but they still require some work β€” and some cooperation from a spirit. There are three main ways a talen gets made.

Method 1: A Spirit Donates Energy

This is the most common way. A spirit spins off a piece of its own power into a physical object. This does not trap the spirit β€” the spirit stays free. But it does hurt the spirit (it takes lethal damage equal to the talen's rating), so spirits will not do it without good reason.

Ways to get a spirit to donate energy:

  • Ask nicely and offer something in return β€” Essence, protection, a favor.
  • If your pack dominates the spirits in your territory, you can demand a talen tithe β€” a regular offering of talens in exchange for your pack's protection. Be careful: demand too much and the spirits will rebel.
  • Very rarely, a spirit will offer a talen freely to a werewolf it respects.
🐺 Elder Mara on talen tithes: "My pack runs a talen tithe in our territory. Once a month, three spirits each give us one talen. That is our arrangement. But I set that up with years of respect, fair dealing, and two very memorable fights where I bled for those spirits' safety. You do not get a tithe by demanding it from strangers. You earn it."

Method 2: Use the Talen Rite

There is also a rite for creating talens β€” simpler than the Fetish Rite. This rite is typically used to bind a very weak spirit into an object, or to properly seal and stabilize the energy a spirit has donated. Ask your Storyteller if this rite is available to your character.

Method 3: Natural Formation

Very rarely, talens form on their own in places where a lot of spiritual energy has built up over time. A battlefield where many spirits died. A site where the Gauntlet has been thin for centuries. A crossroads where strange things happen. These natural talens are found, not made β€” and finding them is its own adventure.

Pacey Gets Talens From a Trade. After her pack clears out a corrupted spirit terrorizing fire spirits near downtown, the grateful spirits offer Pacey two talens as thanks. One is a small clay bead that crackles with warmth β€” a two-dot fire talen that calls up Influence (Fire) at two dots for one scene. The other is a strip of dried leather knotted in a specific pattern. Pacey doesn't know what it does until Elder Mara studies it and says: "Wind spirit. Weak. It will push you faster for one scene. Use it when you're chasing something that can really run."

Building Your Own Custom Fetish

The books give examples of fetishes and talens, but you can work with your Storyteller to create something custom β€” a fetish or talen that fits your character, your territory, and the spirits you have met in play.

When you want to create a custom fetish, bring these questions to your Storyteller:

  • What spirit is going in? What is its Rank? (This sets your dot rating.)
  • What is the vessel? What object will it be bound into?
  • Why does the object fit the spirit? What is the symbolic connection?
  • What is the fetish's power? What does it actually do in game terms?
  • Did you negotiate with the spirit, or force it?

A custom fetish should feel like it belongs to your character specifically. Pacey's compass came from a junk shop in Spenard and is carved with her own claw-mark. That is hers. That is the history of that fetish. When she passes it on someday, that history goes with it.

🐺 Elder Mara: "I have a fetish I made forty years ago. It is a cracked belt buckle from a truck driver who died on the Glenn Highway. The spirit inside is a road spirit β€” restless, always moving. I bound it willingly after I pulled it out of a spirit-storm it would not have survived. That history is in the buckle now. When I hold it I can feel the whole length of that highway in my hand. Make something like that. Make it mean something."

Getting Them On Your Sheet

At Character Creation

Fetishes are purchased as Merits during character creation. A two-dot fetish costs 2 Merit dots. A four-dot fetish costs 4 Merit dots.

When you purchase a fetish at creation, work with your Storyteller to decide:

  • What the fetish is and what it does
  • Where it came from β€” did you make it? Inherit it? Trade for it? Find it?
  • What the history of that item is

This history matters. The Storyteller may use it in play. A fetish your character stole from an enemy pack is a different kind of problem than one your character's mentor gave them on their deathbed.

Talens at Creation

Talens are handled differently β€” similar to how Changeling handles Goblin Fruit. The number of talens your character can carry is tied to their Primal Urge:

In Play

You can also acquire fetishes and talens during the game through roleplay. When these options are used, talens and fetishes have no Experience Cost:

  • Making one yourself using the Fetish Rite or the Talen Rite
  • Trading with other packs β€” talens especially change hands this way
  • Earning them as rewards from spirits or from the Storyteller
  • Taking them from enemies (this comes with its own complications)
  • Finding natural talens in the field
🐺 Elder Mara's Final Word: "A fetish is not just a tool. It is a story. When you hold one that has been used well, you can almost feel the hunts it has been on, the hands that held it before yours, the spirits that lived and argued inside it. When you make one β€” truly make one, with intention and care β€” you are adding your chapter to something that might outlast you by a hundred years. Treat them accordingly. That is all I ask."
