One thousand years is a long time for anyone. It's an eternity for the denizens of the Mana Wastes. When the Age of Collapse began and Alkenstar was destroyed, the Mana Wastes was thrown into a very quiet turmoil. Frequent manastorms, swirling with a Weep-intensified fury, roared across the desert, leaving chaos and occasionally fleshwarp creatures in their wake. Some of these fleshwarp creatures were once people, animals, or plants. And some are created from nothing but the roiling chaos itself.
The fleshwarp people have several communities in the Wastes, including some nomadic ones, but the largest is Grittybank, positioned at the confluence of the Gritty River and its largest tributary. Grittybank is a refuge for all, not just fleshwarp people, but few non-fleshwarp people live in the community long-term.
The old ways of creating fleshwarp creatures still work, but most of the Nexian fleshforges haven't seen flames in centuries. Still, some wizards continue to press the old traditions the best they can. After all, if they can create fleshwarp creatures that subsist on photosynthesis or have more efficient metabolisms, the limited food may go a lot farther. Few consider this a practical path, though as Nex and Geb both prepare for renewed conflict the idea has become more appealing to some.
Fleshwarp people generally refer to the process of becoming fleshwarped as "reconfiguring". It is extremely rude to refer to it as "disfiguring" or any other term that implies that they are damaged, even if the change resulted in modifications that the fleshwarp individual personally finds unpleasant. Still, it is considered rude to ask about the circumstances of reconfiguration, as it is often one of the most traumatic events in a fleshwarp person's life.
The Fleshwarp ancestry is unlocked for all players. If you choose a traumatic backstory, be thoughtful about how you present it, using content warnings when the situation warrants it.
