The kobold Brakkle Stormscale was a tenured professor of occultism at Desna's Institute of Valiant Arts for almost a decade before a consistent pattern of missing citations and a stubborn, defensive insistence that he should be exempt from the more tedious requirements of academic rigor forced the university to part ways with him. Undeniably brilliant but ornery and self-serving, Brakkle believes solving the mystery of the shardstorms will be his ticket back into academia's good graces. He was one of the earliest and most influential voices advocating for the formation of the Stargazing Vigil, and though the Harbor of Hearts insisted the guild will have to have a Shardbound leader, he's managed to secure a pivotal position as its steward.
Brakkle has a brilliant scientific mind, and he's dedicated himself to studying the notoriously esoteric and difficult to quantify field of occultism because no other field would give him the challenge he desires. He knows more about not only occultism but also arcane and primal magics than even most practitioners of those arts. He's also got an above average working knowledge of divine magic, though he'll insist he's a world-class expert on that too. While Brakkle is proud and arrogant and resents having to go over information that should already be known, his passion for scientific discovery is entirely sincere. When he has something truly new and exciting to study his ego falls to the wayside, and it's hard not to get swept up in his sheer enthusiasm for his work.
