Growing up in a small kitsune village, Lucian was born into magic and wonder. With many siblings and loving parents, a simple life in the village was more than enough when he was young. In Afri however, the winters can be harsh and severe. One such winter came when he was 12, and the village wasn’t nearly prepared enough for it. Several kitsune, both young and old, died from the harsh cold, and the rest did what they could to survive, which was huddling for warmth and hoping and praying that the pain would end sooner rather than later. The memory of that time haunts Lucian to this day, and he suffers nightmares from it.
One day, when he was 16, a human man somehow wandered into the village and collapsed, gravely wounded. In a land of beasts, this was more than an oddity, if not an impossibility, which baffled the kitsune. Nevertheless, the kitsune nursed the human back to health, and he was welcome to stay as long as he needed. Lucian took an interest in him, asking him all sorts of questions about the world outside the village and Afri. In turn, Lucian, being a fortune teller in training at the time, would tell the man his future. Whether it be love, fortune, fame, home, Lucian could theoretically tell him, but the path to the future is not static; it ebbs and flows with the choices one makes.
As it must be, eventually the man left, leaving Lucian curiouser and curiouser about the outside world, a world full of all sorts of people and places. Ruminating on it for two years, he decided to leave the village at the age of 18, and journeyed from place to place, plying his trade as a fortune teller. Eventually, he took it upon himself to nudge his customers into the right direction for what they were looking for; if someone was looking for love, perhaps he spotted someone nearby who was looking for the same. Likewise, if someone sought fortune, maybe he heard of a ‘get rich quick’ idea going through town, and if it was a safe option he would subtly direct them to it. Regardless, he would never lie to those who were earnest, and lead them as best as he could towards a brighter future. Those who were rotten to the core or spiteful he would only tell futures of woe and misery, hoping at the very least they would change their ways, but if not it at least gave them a good scare.
Every now and then, Lucian performs fortunes on himself, seeing if there are possible paths that he should go down himself. On one such occasion, as he was getting ready to move once again, a particular path stood out to him: one leading to Tonroe, an underground settlement. There, he saw a mysterious group. Something about this path tugged at him more strongly than usual, and he took it as a sign that something great concerning this group was about to happen, if not already. Grinning, he left for Tonroe.
“What does fate have in store this time, I wonder?”
