Disembodied Voice
A human figure is strangely suspended, on one of the walls, while a black stain radiates out from it. It is mostly absorbed into the wall. One of the hands is stuck stiff, not far away is a black, un-finished, crudely drawn circle and words
It repeats.
On the floor is an empty gun. It is covered in some sort of oily black substance.
[perception] The body has a key card with numbers on it and a small data pad.
[computers] The data pad has a series of videos on it
Video Log
Entry 1
Dim lights and sounds of boots on metal echo as a long line of miners in heavy gear make way down a mine shaft. The camera rotates and points at a woman’s face.
Dana Rosenberg, Site 42 foreman,10,204-02-13. We started losing people this morning. At first I thought they were just walking off of the job and locked the main doors, but it didn’t do anything. Since I can’t seem to get any signal out to leadership or the base camp, I’m starting this log as per policy 1024-2.a. I am having our techs run diagnostics to reestablish contact and have three teams running search patterns within the new shafts for the missing crew.
Entry 2
A large gathering of miners are grouped in some sort of junction within the mine.
All search has turned up nothing. No sign of our missing people. But we discovered these things.
The camera points at a wall where strange electronic devices appear embedded into the rock.
We have miners here who have been on the job for months and no one has seen these things before. It’s like they just appeared out of thin air. Our tech seems to think this may be forming something he called a Faraday cage. He says it may be preventing our radio signals from going out.
We tried removing one of these things, but it has resulted in an energy surge that badly hurt Luca and Wu.
At this point I have no choice but halt all work and start evacuation procedures.
Entry 3
Loud banging and sounds of mechanical machinery can be heard in the background. And a man is shown talking to the foreman.
Ma’am, I can’t get the door to open no matter what I do. I think they have been re-programmed.
What do you mean re-programmed?
The codes are all different ma’am. This can happen when a quarantine protocol is triggered or when a mine is decommissioned… or if someone triggered it manually.
Are you telling me someone trapped us in there?
I don’t know ma’am. But this could never happen by accident.
Entry 4
The power has gone out and we can’t use our tools to force our way out. We still have emergency lighting, but that doesn’t have enough amperage to drive the heavy machines.
The carts seem to still be working and we intend to ram our way out of here.
The camera turns to a group of miners who are busy loading a mine cart. After it looks full the foreman yells out,
Ok, let her loose and close the junction.
The cart is seen moving out of the area and the doors are closed.
After a minute a very loud noise is heard and the lights go out.
What happened? Did it work? Open the doors.
Entry 5
Sound of lots of people moving through tunnels in heavy gear. It is dark, with he only light coming from flashlights that create chaotic shadows on the walls.
Since we can’t ram our way out using the main entrance, we are moving up to the old tunnels. One of the old timers thinks there should be some shafts that weren’t sealed off.
Entry 6
The camera opens onto an office hallway. It looks as if it laying on the floor. Green carpet and yellow wallpaper pose a stark contrast to the mine shafts in the previous clips. About a dozen exhausted and dirty miners can be seen in the shot, sitting on the floor and resting.
Then the camera moves and points at a man’s face,
Xien Ha, Team 4 Captain, date… I don’t know. I think it’s 10,204-02-30.
He pauses, closes his eyes and whispers something to himself. His lips seems to tremble slightly.
Dana… Dana is gone.
A few teams have managed to stay together, but the rest… the rest are all gone.
We don’t know where we are, but this is not the mine, that’s for sure. We don’t have many supplies and we decided to keep on moving. This looks like some sort of an office, so we’re going to look for a staircase and an exit.
Entry 7
Xien’s face is shown really up close. He is talking much more quietly than before. Behind him, other people can be seen walking and looking around.
These hallways never end. Why can’t I find a way out? Frank says this is a non-euclidian space. I have no idea what he’s talking about. But, this place makes no sense.
Entry 8
Camera is seen pointing at some sort of black mold-looking growths that appear to cover an entire corner of a room.
Ok this is NOT ok. Are you telling me we have been breathing this stuff in?
There is a low voice that answers off camera, too low to understand over the loud humming from the lights.
The camera turn around and Xien talks directly into it with a very alarmed voice,
There is something here.
His lips quiver and he lets out a small whimper.
It’s horrible. I think it killed Dana and all the others. I don’t even know about the other crews, but at least there is some good news.
He nervously laughs through tears,
We have enough food now that there is so few of us left.
A disembodied voice sounds off camera,
Show them the markings
Xien zooms the camera at the mold. There, just barely noticeable, is a body of a miner, partially absorbed into a black pool of ichor. An arm can be seen with an insignia that has the number 5 on it.
I think they are here. You know that other mine incident? Where nobody was found? Well… we found them! And you know what else? I can’t believe nobody thought of this before. It make so much sense now. We’re all…
A loud strange sound echoes through the corridors some distance away. The voice yells out,
We have to go right now! It’s coming.
Entry 9
There is a sound of automatic weapons and the camera erratically swings to point at a squad of Radix soldiers firing into a hallway.
One of them yells out,
Was that a fucking bear holding a mother fucking rail gun?
Another soldier, a woman with dark short hair, looks at Xien and yells out,
Move, move! Get the fuck out!
She then looks into the hallway at another tall burly soldier. He is heavily augmented and seems to be pulling out some sort of device.
Rush, what the fuck are you doing? Rush!
The man walks off camera towards the direction of the gunfire. The woman looks back at Xien and then yells out to the other soldiers,
We have to fall back! Fall back!
She and most of the others quickly move backwards towards the camera and it too appears to retreat. One soldier stays behind and seems to try to give others time, when suddenly a thick, very long, crooked black line appears out of the corner and skewers him right through the torso and then pulls him out of sight.
Yells and cries are heard from behind and the camera points at the floor and is shaken violently as Xien appears to run away at full speed.
Entry 10
The camera is still and pointing at some sort of a large door. Xien's voice is low and exhausted,
It’s just me now. I got separated from the others when we were all running away and now I’m all alone.
I don’t have any food left. But I did find this door.
If I only knew how to open it. This stupid code doesn’t work or I can’t figure it out. Or maybe I just can’t remember it right.
He points at some sort of access card. It's yellow and has a sticky note on it with the numbers o-371 on it.
I found this on one of the bodies, but I can’t tell if it’s even meant for this door. I don’t know what else it could be for.
He laughs a desperate laugh,
I don’t want to leave, but I think I have to move or this thing will find me.
Entry 11
The camera points at an empty hallway. Xien slowly talks,
They are all gone.
I can no longer track the time. I’m starving and weak and he keeps on coming. I don’t think I can outrun him anymore.
I think I understand now, but I don’t think I care. It’s not like I can find my way back. I can only move forward or stop. And so I stop now. Everything stops.
There is a low sound of something rubbing against a wall and the camera goes out.
