Long ago, the continent of Eberron was home to a race called the Exceed who had a natural affinity for magic and used it to create amazing technologies, the most notable of which was their amazing floating cities. These cat-like humanoids where the dominant race in Eberron, outnumbering even humans. A Drow sorcerer named Melbu Frahma was able to convince the Exceed, that due to their natural flight ability, their superior intelligence, and their astounding understanding of magic, they were second only to the God's, and superior to other creatures. Melbu lead the Exceed to invade the land and enslave all of Eberron and naming himself the Emperor. Melbu Frahma's rule would have remained sealed if not for his over ambition that lead him to attempt to take oppress the one race he knew could be his undoing... The dragons. Over time, a Dragonborne Wizard named Diaz slowly gathered a resistance in secret. The resistance grew and became a full fighting force of all races working together, and at the frontline, the Dragons. Knowing that the dragons would soon eliminate his Exceed forces, Melbu made a deal with the God of Oppression and Power Asmodeus. Asmodeus provided Melbu an army of Virages, massive Fiends, to combat the dragons of Eberron. The Virages where able to overpower the dragons, driving them to near extinction, but the humanoid creativity and ability to adapt, lead them to almost completely wipe out the Exceeds.
Realizing that the Eberron humanoid forces could not defeat Melbu’s Virage force, a few remaining dragons thought that their only hope, was to merge Human creativity and Dragon strength. Diaz was able to use the magic power of 7 Dragon volunteers to create 7 powerful lacrama. Dubbed “Dragon Spirits”, these orbs would endow a worthy person with the power of the Dragon that sacrificed itself. Thus, the Dragoons or Dragon Knights where born. Wanting to keep the land dwellers from getting hurt, The Dragoons and the remaining dragons attacked the Exceed Floating capital of Kadessa to take on Melbu Frahma and the Virages head on.
History tells, the battle was so fierce, and so much powerful magic was used, that it actually warped the environment around the battle. Ultimately, the Dragoon’s and Dragons where able to wipe out the Virages, but at a cost of their own lives. Reports say that the Dragoon Leader, Fire Dragoon Zieg, was able to kill Melbu Frahma before succumbing to his own injuries, although Melbu Frahma's body was never found. The Floating Capital of Kadessa fell from the sky, and its ruins remain as a reminder of the countless Dragon, Humanoid, and Exceed lives lost. Diaz was named King of Eberron as the land-dwelling nation celebrated the fall of Melbu Frahma. King Diaz understood that the Exceed were manipulated by Melbu, and spared them from any punishment. The few remaining Exceeds, now numbering in the hundreds instead of millions, where housed in the Western Forest, nicknamed The Wingly Forest (Wingly being a racial slur that other races call Exceeds as an insult). They have since built a self-sufficient society, living a peaceful, but uneasy existence apart from other races.
