Bonehowlers

Bonehowlers are ghastly undead creatures that prowl the frostbitten wilds of the Bifröst Isles. Feared in local legend and whispered about in firelit shelters, these reanimated monstrosities are born from unburned corpses left exposed on bitter, moonless nights. Their chilling howls echo across tundras and fjords like a funeral dirge, freezing the blood of any who hear them.

Description

Bonehowlers appear as grotesque amalgamations of skeletal and rotting beast parts—typically Hippotherium, or Wartusk like in origin. Their forms are warped by the necromantic frost that birthed them: exposed bones etched with frostbite runes, sinew stretched too tightly across cracked ribs, and glowing blue mist leaking from empty sockets and gaping maws. Frozen antlers or twisted spines often sprout from their backs like jagged icicles.

Their jaws are unnaturally wide, capable of emitting piercing, supernatural howls that can stun or disorient prey. These wails are said to carry the voices of the creature's former self—or perhaps of the winter spirits that reanimated them.

Behavior

Bonehowlers are nocturnal and territorial, often haunting the outskirts of settlements or patrolling glacial graveyards. They do not hunt for sustenance but are drawn to warmth, sound, and life. Packs of Bonehowlers may roam together under the full moon, but more commonly they wander alone, following instinct or echoes of past lives.

Origin

Bonehowlers form when the corpses of animals—or sometimes humanoids—are left unburned and unburied during the coldest nights of the year. The ambient necrotic energy of the Bifröst Isles, amplified by the bitter chill and lingering spirits of the dead, seeps into the remains and resurrects them in a cursed mockery of life.

Villagers and shamans alike believe that the spirits of these creatures were not properly guided to the afterlife, and that the cold itself corrupts and reshapes their essence into something predatory and vengeful.
