Tabes was born with the blessing of Brujeria. They call it a blessing but it feels like a
curse.
Where his mother was gifted with beauty, he is gifted with “wrongness”. Too tall, too
skinny, and limbs too long. As if he had been stretched out.
His long black hair falls limp across his face, as if recently submersed in water.
His hind legs are those of a black stag. And a set of rams horns adorn his head.
A slight smell of mulch and wet earth emanate from him, no matter how much he scrubs.
He casts no shadow and bares no reflection. As if even light does not wish to touch him.
Which would certainly explain his constantly pallid complexion.
While his siblings are kind to him, the other children of his village find sport in chasing
him and pelting him with stones.
So he hides at home. Helping his mother craft potions and poisons. It is fun hunting and
gathering herbs, roots, lizards, and insects.
While he has not the strength to help his father cut trees, he spends evenings with him
playing the pan flute.
Because he is shunned by much of the community, Tabes has turned to nature. Nature
does not judge you for what you are. All are equal.
If you listen carefully, you can hear the songs of Brujeria. They are in the cry of the kill,
the creak of old wood, and the crawling of insects.
Family
Marin (Mother)
Blessed of Brujeria. Her long, auburn, hair grows flowers in the spring and summer.
There is always a smell of apple and cinnamon about her.
She is the local hedgewizard/widwife. Making potions, poultices, and poisons to solve
all your basic needs. Be it a sprained ankle, hay fever, or an infestation of rabbits.
She adores all her children but tends to dote more on Tabes. She tries coxing him to be
more outgoing and overcome his fear of other people.
Ogier (Father)
A lumberjack and member of the local militia. A powerfully built man, skin darkened by
long days in the sun. Spends most of his time searching for good wood or processing
planks at his mill. He is training his son, Roan, to also be a lumberjack.
Annice (Older sister)
She is not currently at home. Definitely the brains of the family, she has been accepted at
a university. The first in her family to achieve such a high level of education. The only
person from the village to go to university in almost fifty years. It caused quite the stir.
A communal fund was raised to help support her. She is studying to become a doctor.
The village, and the surrounding communities, are looking forward to one day having a
properly trained physician close by.
Roan (Younger brother)
While not yet as strong as his father, he is well on his way. He spends his days hauling
lumber and practising with the other boys in the militia. All the lads his age hope to one
day be folk heroes, like those the bards sing of.
For now they work, fight, and drink whatever booze they can steal.
The Festival
Marin has asked Tabes to go to the festival. Hoping to help break him out of his shell.
She gave him a few crates of cures to sell and a list of things to buy.
Tabes was worried he would be attacked but with so many different races, especially the
tieflings, nobody took particular notice of him. He liked being invisible amongst the
crowd.
Working hard, he managed to complete his tasks on the first day. He found a good buyer
for his goods and was able to fill out his list at an apothecary.
He ran into a familiar face. A woman from his village and friend of his mother. She was
heading home before the city got too busy. Not wanting to leave yet, and concerned
about being robbed, he asked if she would be willing to take a parcel to his mother. After
plying her with some honeyed bread, she agreed.
He wrapped up the goods and money and added in a note. It explained that he would be
staying for a couple more days and not to worry about him.
Goals
Tabes wishes to be a hero. Someone people will look up to and respect. Not ridicule and
fear.
He wants to one day find Brujera and ask her why she has cursed him
