Pieces of Eight

Notes

Where did all this begin:

Well the group all knew each other from a small neighborhood in Eadwald, Capital City. They had all been a part of the same storm bunker. They were all from the GateWard. Initially there were six: Bexley, Burryaga Agaburry, Marrow, Mordantyr Al’Corvus, Sinikka Henrikstytar Kalsarikannit, and Ysera Song (a.k.a. Sera). A young girl was murdered near your group. In the early days of stumbling into the investigation, Ysera died. She was discovered dead in a small alley. A friend of the Song family, Barron Selby joined the group to find what or who killed her. The group met him well doing the letter ceremony for Ysera. Now, two deaths were on the streets. While investigating these two death the group adds a dog by the name of Nugget. The party discovers the dog can speak and read for that matter. One of Nuggets passions is to read the daily newspaper.

This dog has become a beloved and protected member of the group. Nugget was meant to introduce how familiars work in this world, but do to the awesomeness of Nugget, everyone wants her around. She has traveled with them every since. Also during this investigation, Unknown and the Enclave have been encountered. It seems both groups now have a very high interest in the group. Some how they have been suspected to be a part of the cult called Listeners of Kern. This seems like it was done by the Enclave to get the Inquisitors to do their dirty work.

The Road North to Innsmouth:

With both murders solved the group fled the city, heading north. They used contacts that Mordantyr had from his magical training to join some caravans heading north to Innsmouth and finally ending their travel in Northgate. When the road turned west to avoid Cooper's Forest, they went in to investigate. They were just going in as a bet. The plan was to stay for a night within the cursed forest. They find the troubled land covered with plants that move and attack and creatures that were the combination of other created. The Unknown being a super cool creature.

Noticing that bypassing the forest adds days to the caravan trip, they decide to go in to clear it out. They discover a hedge maze with a keep in the center. They also find a tomb and magical device. In the tomb they come to understand that they need to destroy the tree within the keep. The magical device is the only thing that could permanently destroy this tree. They move in to get through the plant guardian and attack the tree. It is destroyed, but like a horror movie setting up for a sequel everyone has a feeling that a creature left with a chunk of the tree still in it.

Like any great story, this is where the party splits. Sinikka decides to leave. She knows the value of the keep they found and wants to use it with her former liege to hopefully take command of it. The group wished her well, but based on later correspondence, it might be a rough go for her. From what could be gathered her liege betrayed her again. She is likely alive, and in rebel action against the noble.

As the party left Cooper's Forest on the north west side, they saw the caravan. They also saw two groups of people they hoped to never see. An Inquisitors followed by two units of monks went into Innsmouth. Just behind them were a group from the enclave. It looked like they had already taken a prisoner, but had two casters and several of their guard. They traveled through Innsmouth continuing north presumably heading to Northgate.

Innsmouth and The Tower:

Sammy contacted the group. He has noticed some activity out near one of the demon watch towers, and was hoping this group would take a look. He had a companion by the name of Hiraeth yr Hynafiad. He wanted to test his new friend a little. It was not a matter of trust, he wanted to see how he would do in the field. You all head out to the watch tower. They are attacked multiple times by demons on the path to the tower. The tower had been attacked and no one was alive when they arrived. They were killed by human hands.  Investigating the tower and area for a day, the group spots something really bad. A really big demon out in the field. The tower is seeing some construction. I side chamber has been built, with a bunch of shelves. None of this group know anything about ships but the shelves look perfect for amphora. Outside the tower are several giant posts or poles.

The next day the group head out. They encounter a group of soldiers that are really beaten up, and a couple of caravanners that were attacked by demons in the wilderness. The group a little injured fall back to the tower to rest before going back to Innsmouth. They see in the distance the giant demon get attacked. It sheds demons and teleports to safety. With the wounded soldier acting as a scout the group limps back to town. The town has crazy amounts of activity. They are preparing for a demon incursion. They historically make their last stand in the arena. Supplies and weapons are being moved for this last stand. troops are being gathered to see if they can attack it in the wilds. They are looking for anyone to join.

Something happens in the town, but I can not remember what.  Whatever happens, the group decides to abandon the towns needs and head into the ruins looking for some bandits.

To the Lair of the Black Bergan and the Unknown:

I am not sure but this might be the last of these updates. This one should leave us where we left off as I remember it. Again and always, if you remember something I missed and you think it is important please add it.  Like I did not add anything about the weird numbers you found in Eadwald - The Capital City of Eadwald. There are things that I did not think were super important in the story so far, but you might remember something that I missed or you think have more bearing.  Please bring them up.

These brave companions, well not brave enough to defend the town, but brave enough to do their own things, head into the ruins. They search out the bandits. Barron Selby found a reference to a minor gang from Manea are here in the area. It makes no sense, but they are here. One of their people killed some children when she escaped your group.  Seeing that you are pursuing them, one of their men tries to parley. Barron Selby murders him in the street.

Searching or looting the body,  they discover that his name was Cullen Braga. He had a journal. He was for sure a member of the Black Bergan, but he was a member of the Listeners of Kern too. The group remembered that they were now accused of being a Listeners of Kern. The group might have more in common with him, than they thought. They continue to follow a trail through the ruins. They come up on a some ancient tower, that the bandits are using as a guard post. They attack the tower that evening. They kill the guards and one of the two Unknown. These Unknown are trained to fight and are quick fierce. The group follow the path more the next day. They are attacked by more Unknown. They seem to only attack or consecrate their attacks on Marrow. She was brutally attacked. Hiraeth yr Hynafiad and his strange magical weapons helped fend off the beast in short order.

This is where the group split up again. Hiraeth yr Hynafiad wanted to go back and talk to Sammy. He headed back to Innsmouth even though Sammy said he would meet the group in Northgate when they get there. Maybe he went rogue maybe not.  The group can not know for now. With the Enclave and Unknown after the group, they just hope this will end well.

Even with this loss they continue following the path in the ruins. These ruins seem to go on forever. This was truly an immense city at some point in the past. They find that they bandits are using some underground base. This old underground complex from the ancient city in the ruins was built long ago. Watching they find that they have Unknown. They are being used as labor as they are carrying the giant poles from the tower into the lower level. The group looked for a way in.

Barron Selby decides to sneak in to recon the underground complex. He discovers that the Unknown must be living on a lower level. They are using the poles to build a structure on one side of the complex. It is scaffolding that could be the base of a crane. The level was too busy to move down into the lower level. It was unclear what the level was or what it was built for. It has a grand staircase heading from the surface to the level below. A balcony surrounds the stairs. Sounds can be heard from the lower level. Beyond that are all these glass walls, making rooms beyond. The Bandits have converted this space to work as a command and control area.
