The Magic System

Ever saw vines coming out of your neighbour’s arm? Or seen someone running faster than normal? Coming to terms with skills might be helpful. Skills are obtainable all throughout your life and they certainly make it easier. Ten different elements to choose from, each skill having a necessity of its own. What you need for your life is left up to you. Though, keep in mind that Oriha divided into ten different nations for a reason.

You obtain skills by leveling up or evolving. As soon as you did either of those things, you will feel a tickling, nearly burning sensation all over your body, while your brain gets flushed with skill options. The sensation on your skin will slowly increase, becoming painful but bearable for a while. The second you choose a skill, the sensation as well as the information in your head will all be vanished.

Some scholars have devoted their lives to copying every information about every skill into books.
You see your neighbour lift boulders with the same skill that you chose, but you still can’t more than a barrel filled with water. Those kind of restrictions come from skill levels. Acquiring a skill makes you no master. As same as everyone else, you start out with level one. Then it’s up to you to build up to level ten. But how do you go from squeaky level one to boulder–lifting level ten?

Easy, the more you use your skills, the more likely you get to level them up.
The not–so–easy part would be the symptoms of low level skills, causing you to think twice if you really want to use this skill. It makes the skill user ill while using. Classified as "low level" are skill levels one to five. The higher the skill level, the more the symptoms fade and you may finally gain control.

Though you should always choose skills that are suitable for your personal level. Symptoms become unbearable if they’re too advanced for your body and it takes longer to level them up.

Always take a pillow to practice, you’ll faint here and there.

The personal level should be the very second thing you know about yourself, after your own name of course. There are no limits, but you usually only see people under a hundred levels. Considering what you have to do to level up so fast to reach a hundred, it may be a good thing.

It is widely known, that you need experience to rise your level. So in order to gain experience, you need to slay monsters and plants. But before you run into the woods, you need to level up, so you can obtain skills. Otherwise you barely have a chance.

No worries, you still level up organically. There is no need to hunt down any creature. With time your experience rises on its own, even if it’s slow, it’s the common way to level up – and a peaceful one at that.

So you levelled up, gathered some skills and even ate your vegetables. But then you wake up from the deepest sleep you had in a while and, oh no, you suddenly grow leaves on your back. You, my friend, have evolved. Don’t be afraid, your body adjusted to your skills in order to survive. So you better appreciate your new cape.

Puberty will hit you like a brick, as every evolution is visible. You evolve towards the skill elements you mainly choose. Every skill will affect the way your body reacts and evolves, so pick with intention. Though if you’re constantly around fire, your body might naturally develop fire resistance, without having to obtain skills.

Evolving is a survival mechanism of your body to adjust to your skills, which also means it uses a lot of your energy. Evolving while hunting for monsters isn’t ideal, truth be told.

Evolving a lot will change your appearance more and more, though while it comes with its perks, it drags its consequences right behind. For example, you evolved for quite a while now, reaching for the stars – becoming the very best. Then your next evolutions turns you into a ghost, able to levitate above the ground and reach through walls. But now you have lost the ability to speak, since you no longer have vocal chords.

There is no limit to evolving, only common sense.

Travel

The most efficient way to get around is by taming monsters and riding them to your destination. But how long will it take for you to arrive? Your travel options are divided into three categories; (four-)foot, sea and air. The higher your budget goes, the faster the animal will be. But you can always tame one yourself, of course. I mean, if you dare. Though if not, here are the most popular travel animals.

The Full Timeline

The most exciting (and dangerous) season in Oriha. Monster babies are fully grown, finally going out into the world to live their life more independently. Maybe some humans along the way. Naturally, this season is highly dangerous for Orihans, as most have barely any skills for combat. To protect its citizens, every nation has a government-assigned Monster Hunting Guild. The most popular job amongst your youngsters. Getting accepted as a monster hunter means training every day, developing and mastering combat skills. Then, when Hunting Season hits, they go out to fight monsters to keep the number low.

The Primal War was the first ever war to happen in Oriha. The nation of shadow, Scuryll started to rebel against the financial management for Barawu of Halos, reasoning that their management was coming from ulterior motives such as superiority. Halos would try and stop Scuryll to spread those ideas, by sending the queen’s soldiers as intimidation. But Scurylls would not back down and attack the soldiers, starting a mass brawl, quickly turning into a violent war between Scuryll and Halos. Just when military support from other nations arrived, The Sonotos would end this war the most cruel way. Thousands of deaths. But it was effective, causing the fight to die down.

The big tragedy this event hold is astronomical. People from all nations kept disappearing, then even buildings and parts of nature. It was the first time people truly feared Verno. You may wonder what made Verno so angry that he would delete his own creations. Well, after The Primal War things were critical. People didn’t know how to deal with so many deaths and that amount of destruction. Verno never gave a reason why but we have to assume that he didn’t have a war with thousands of deaths in mind. After the disappearance of more and more Orihans, people started to catch on, trying to pray and apologise. The Sonotos however, responsible for the violent end of The Primal War quickly barricaded behind the walls we know of today’s Sonotos. No one saw another Sonotos until this day.

The world-wide Tribute Day was invented after The Great Deletion and is meant to honor Verno and show one's respect towards Oriha's god. The deaths were of course allowed to be mourned, though people were too afraid to create a day to mourn, fearing they might upset Verno even more.

A program initiated by the princess Todora as an attempt to spread peace, as The Primal War divided the nations even more. Bakers, farmers, architects and more were sent to every nation to share their knowledge and help rebuild buildings that were destroyed in the war. Princess Todora sends out letters every month in order to get feedback about the Unite-Program. Though these letters may or not have not been approved of her own queen.

The Nations

Welcome to Acay – The Bright, Bright Tunnel (once The Bright, Bright Cave)

Acay is the nation of poison skill users. Placed in a great cave, filled with deadly plants. Eager to learn and experiment, yet still seen as unethical for the choice of skill element. While being shunned from the rest of Oriha, the poisonous plants seem to be friendly towards Acays – and Acays, only.

This is the official sigil of Acay.

A group of clever Acays, dressed like Modox stop people without “worthy” poison skills from getting into the cave if they aren’t fooled by their disguise. They all are very tall and lanky. Though if you stick around during feast time, you will see that they’re just teenagers that still go home for dinner with mother.

Welcoming anyone in here should be a federal offense, but take a good look at The Deleted Assets - The Folder

Devoid from color and life, this place is not known of by any Orihans alive today, but let me tell you, you do not want to end up in there. Dying is one thing, but deletion... Every single proof of your existence will be erased. If no one is there to remember you, it'll be like you never existed at all. Get placed in there and it is over, just like that.

Enter Eraphine - The Floating Forest

Eraphine is known for their refusal of modesty. Eraphines will flash their Barawu, show off their evolutions like their life depends on it. The nation crowned itself to the title of the "Most Beautiful Island" because of its spiral cliffs. Since the cliffs are a frequently visited place for tourists, locals intend to keep them beautiful by only letting "acceptable" evolutions settle down near the cliffs. A pretty face is advised.

This is the official sigil of Eraphine.

The mail etiquette in Eraphine remains unmatched in all of Oriha. Letters sent in Eraphine must have a yellow(ish) envelope and dark red ink used for the adresses. This way, every other nation knows it was sent from Eraphine. Letters sent to Eraphine do not have to follow this etiquette.

Be welcome in Halos – The Land of Light

Glance at the horizon and you’ll see the very castle of the queen of light. The Halos take pride in their monarchy, or anything they can shine their light on, really. Viewing themselves as the elite of Oriha, Halos look down on any other nation, reasoning with their so–called modernity in their economy.

This is the official sigil of Halos.

Every month, the Halos collect Barawus from each nation as a form of "payment for light". Light and darkness can exist without the control of the Halos, though their special force keeps it balanced and stable.

The World History Exhibition is the first and currently only exhibition that shows Oriha's history. It was built in the queen's castle, on tribute day as a gift of appreciation for Verno. A popular tourist sight, since it not only shows how Oriha evolved into the Oriha we know today, but also theories of people all around the world. You can find the most famous theories there.

Introducing you to Lavon – The Nation In Ashes

This is the official sigil of Lavon.

This is the official sigil of Rivule.

Each nation has a different set of skills, that help with different tasks. The highest paying job would be overseas, in another nation, that would require the skills of another element more in specific fields. Though it is not recommended, as it can get extremely lonely. Of course each nation has a few ‘safe’ jobs that are guaranteed to earn you enough to survive – fisherman in the Rivule. Most desired jobs are in official Monster Hunting Guilds, as it brings benefits to the whole family.

Visit Scuryll – The Island of The Nights

Hidden by day, approachable by night. The nation of shadow skill users is truly hard to reach, yet not uninviting. The monsters will be the fuel for your nightmares, including shadow evolutions. A strong stomach is advised.

This is the official sigil of Scuryll.

Just when military support from other nations arrived, The Sonotos would end this war the most cruel way. Thousands of deaths. But it was effective, causing the fight to die down.

This is the official sigil of Soile.

Greetings, you’re now in Sonotos – The Empire of Dunes

Hidden behind the great walls of sandstone lies the nation of wind. Cut from society by choice, though the Sonotos are still respected – even feared amongst the nations. No one has really seen a Sonotos in years, yet no one will take on a search through Sonotos, as the deafening wind is rumored to drive you crazy before even reaching the doors of the empire.

The big tragedy this event hold is astronomical. People from all nations kept disappearing, then even buildings and parts of nature. It was the first time people truly feared Verno. You may wonder what made Verno so angry that he would delete his own creations. Well, after The Primal War things were critical. Inviting you to Yucian – The Land of All

The friendly neighbors, the users of physical skills, or better known as Yucians live in nearly untouched land. With their multiple limbs, they make sure to welcome and accept anyone, which is why Yucian has the most diversity of all the nations. Meeting any Yucian will tell you that the name "physical skills" is rather misleading. Yucians lead with impressive intelligence, emotional, as well as logical.

This is the official sigil of Yucian.

Yucians have a genereally simple vocabulary, but they developed a dialect over the years, potentially making it harder for other nations to understand them. Fret not! This is what they mean when they say:

"Ye" = (are) you, e.g. "Where ye from?"
"Yuc" = an informal way to adress someone, similar to "pal/buddy/friend"
"Snazzy" = cool
"Ye take?" = a way to ask if you agree, similar to "deal?"

The Storylines

The most beautiful queen to have ever lived, or otherwise called Queen Ankalen reigns over the light nation. She values beauty over skills, which is why she has forbidden her offsprings any kind of evolution to, preserve their handed–down beauty. The heir has to follow her footsteps to not only follow the traditional way of ruling, but also keep up the tidy image to other nations. Queen Ankalen is also knowingly against multicultural nations or to be more specific — Yucian and/or Scuryll.

No matter how hard your eyes refuse to see what they see, the beauty in his ugliness is undeniable. Most people think it’s his long, invitingly pink hair opposed to his usually desaturated skin, but in this reality beauty means nothing but an oh-so-kind heart.

When Edwin Lanchard wakes up in a video-game-like world with monsters, deadly plants, and people with eight spider legs, he quickly decides to escape as soon as possible. But in order to do that, he has to level up, not knowing a higher entity has other plans for him in mind.

Oh, complex Aestelia. Intelligent, indeed, but questionable social skills. She is incredibly precise with every single one of her skills, especially her poisonous ones. Yet she avoids using them real hard due to unknown reasons. Is it the stigma around Acays? No one truly knows, and as chatty as she is we may never find out.

A messily ripped out page from Veronica's Journal. The beginning is ripped off, as well as the end, making the note hard to read. It was also written in what seems to be a very fast pace. It calls Aestelia out to search for Edwin Lanchard, saying that he may be the one who could "figure out how to end this madness." Aestelia, who held onto the note for as long as she remembers, is convinced her lost sister wrote this for her before something happened to her.

Gems cut from nature and found in mountains. Precious is each one, as Oriha accepted it as their currency. Usually mined in Acay, Lavon, Soile by locals. Yet somehow especially these nations live in poverty.. The gems can be found in every color of the rainbow, and black. The value rises from red being worth the least and black being so precious, that only a few currently alive have seen it with the naked eye.

A neatly ripped out page turned letter from Veronica's Journal. V.E.C., (Veronica Erina Cunningham) sends the letter to Bobling and informs him she knows that there is no record or proof of Bobling being born in Oriha, so she may know something about where he comes from. The letter ends with asking him to respond as soon as possible. But since the returner adress was mysteriously erased, he never did. The letter is in a traditional Eraphine envelope.

Another messily ripped out page from Veronica's Journal. The note mentions that the Skill Encyclopaedia had a few pages left empty, but she noticed that new skills were added — Corrupted Skills. It is directed at Edwin and tells him to search for the original Skill Encyclopedia since by the time Edwin finds it, it should be full of information about these skills. It warns him that getting this book was not something locals agreed with, but it fails to mention that this book was in Halos' possession forever and it is the most famous and valuable book in Orihan history. And that V.E.C. was the one to steal it.

A self writing book that lists every available skill to ever exist. It was discovered by a poor farmer in Halos, who then gave it to his queen as a gift in the very early years of Oriha. Since then, it became the most valuable item in the queen's possession. It granted incredible knowledge to the population. After decades, it filled every element with every possible skill. Then, the book stopped writing, but for unknown reasons, the last few pages remained empty. It became the most visited attraction in Halos. After approval of the queen, it became the most copied book.

Monster Encyclopedia

Is it a bird – is it a plane? No, it’s a 7'5" foot monster charging at you at full speed. Better take cover or hurl yourself to the ground, as it cuts through you like butter with its blade–like arms. Amruchs truly embody the "physical" in their element.

Element: Physical

When you feel a lingering stare on you while doing your morning walk in Acay, it might be your last walk. What you feel may be the eyes of the Modox, a clown like monster. Even though it might be a skill, the title "curse" fits like the perfect shoe. Whoever possesses this skill is able to separate a person from their own memories. These memories will turn into an embodiment of the person they once were. As a horrifying result, a clone of the affected person will appear, simply without the memories. This skill has the major downside of modifying the code, rendering it more unstable with each use. In programmer's language, you may say the code now has two files with the exact same structure. So if the files coexist in Oriha, they'll cause many glitches and security errors. To prevent continuous damage, the only wielder of this skill, Verno, moves the embodiment of memories into Deleted Assets.

Advanced Merging is essentially a possible cure for The Replacement Curse. It unites the person with their (embodiment of) memories again, as long as both are available. Unfortunately, this is only easy in theory, as the coexistence of separate body and memories in Oriha is extremely dangerous. It could break the whole code and with that, it could easily destroy Oriha. That being said, no one ever attempted the usage of this skill.

Plant Encyclopaedia

Plants are most definitely deadly in Oriha. Though they can be beautiful if you aren’t a threat to their habitat. They tend to also have a dedicated element, yet it is not common for them to categorise plants into elements. A "fire" plant for example would notionally grow in Lavon, and not only thrive off fire.

A flower found in caves or generally isolated places. Look at the ceiling and you will find water bubbles hanging, waiting to rain down. With its micro–hairs on its arms it collects moisture out of the air until the water gets too heavy and the water bubbles imitate rain. The roots hold onto a wall or ceiling. You usually find Spoods in a field of other Spoods. They’re the size of a volleyball.
