Noctus Monoculus

Creature in a Bottle

Noctus Monoculus

Wondrous item, rare

The Noctus Monoculus is a unique creature from the depths of the ocean. Some cryptozoologists believe it to be a far relative or living ancestor of the powerful and strange beholders because of its similar appearance and magical ability. Others however see more of a connection to squids, when comparing size, habitat, locomotion and bioluminescence.

The Monoculus can use its single eye to take a look through time to check if predators have traveled through the nearby area in the last day. This information helps them achieve a long live span of up to 10 years. The Monoculus tentacles also contain pigments that can be set aglow if the area is safe for easier hunting.

Because of the depth one has to visit to find a Monoculus in combination with its natural ability to avoid enemies, capturing or even seeing a Monoculus is quite difficult. If one manages to do so however, the reward is certainly there. A freshly harvested Monoculus eye lens can be used like a monocle. A person looking through this device can see up to 24 hours into the past. The person can decide what point in time it specifically wants to see, skipping uninteresting hours and even freezing pictures entirely. While looking through the lens, one can perceive the surroundings of where one currently stands out to a range of 60 ft., even through darkness and magical darkness. This useful tool is of a limited usefulness however, because the lens looses its magical ability 10 hours after it's removal from the creature.

"The island kingdom of Jedun is nigh crime free since they discovered these things about a century ago. Unfortunately the harbor cities on the main land got all of their scoundrels now." - Jette
