The Sancstorylian goddess of death and fate, who lords over the transition from one life to the next. While her exact origins are a mystery, it is generally accepted that she used to be a mortal woman of some kind, before usurping the previous, much more evil god of death who has since been forgotten. Some say she was a human arcanist who wished for a kinder deity of death in place of the old one, while others say that she was an elven queen from the Arborea, back when the Elven Pantheon still mingled among mortals, who fled with her closest entourage to The Shadowfell when the deities of the Elves and Drow started warring, achieving a form of godhood there. Even others say that she's both, somehow having being a new creature, merged into one enigmatic being. She rules over Letherna, also known as the Fortress of Memories, a fortress of black ice in the Shadowfell, where it is said that she inspects the memories of those souls who pass, before passing them along to their afterlife in The Outer Planes. Sometimes, she also is said to pick out people from the Material Plane, taking them to her fortress to both learn about them and their memories, and have them learn about themselves in the process. The Raven Queen is served very faithfully by the Shadar-Kai, the Elves of the Shadowfell.
Ever since The Great Wasting, and the loss of contact to the Illiadian homeworld, the Raven Queen has been safekeeping Illiadian souls in a pocket plane within her fortress, waiting for the day that, someday, the Illiadian gods can collect their children.
