Haeltor
Capital City of Solas, Weyland.
Who Rules: The Earl of Haeltor. The Earl is and extreemly wealthy, brutal and intollerant man of middle years, his second wife is only a year older than his eldest daughter. His wife is an Ostlander who he married as part of a trade deal between Ostland and Haeltor. His elest 2 children from his 1st wife (deceased) are petulant and tyranical with the servants and staff. His youngest from his 2nd marriage is cousin of the Ost King Magnus.
Population: 25,000 (estimated).
Major Products: Lumber, Furs, Coal, Tin Ore, Copper Ore, Zinc Ore, Bitumen and Ironstone.
Armed Forces: 100 Regular Militia, 100 Soldiers, 100 Archers, 50 Mercenaries, 30 Rangers, 10 Men at Arms, 7 Knights, 5 Clerics, 2 Society Mages. A single Cutter and 3 Longships make up the navy of Haeltor and are found patrolling the waters to fend off pirates, raiders, sea monsters and fishermen from Norgard.
Features
Haeltor and its surroundings are some of the most resource rich in Weyland. It is one of the wealthiest cities in Weyland.
The hills and mountains that surround the area are littered with mines and quarries. Tar Sands where the Bitumen is harvested from surround the flat lands of the Haeltor valley.
A deep water harbour and ship yards are protect by a massive fortified harbour wall.
It is genrally cold in Haeltor with snow present apart from the summer months.
The commoners of Haeltor although oppressed an people who are forced to work to ensure the success of Haeltor; however they have coin in their purses, dress well and eat well compared to many commoners. Beggars are outlawed and anyone found begging will be sent to work in the mines as are criminals and prisoners of war.
Approximately one third of Haeltor can trace their roots to Ostland, red and blonde hair not being uncommon.
Many Ost traditions are followed in Haeltor as are the Ostland aspects of the Gods.
Haeltor is a bleak place that see's many warm sunny days. It's cobbled streets are constantly damp from the mist, rain or snow and rarely dry out.
A Church of the One God has recently been built in Haeltor and a small congregation has formed, even the Earl has attended a sevice intrigued by this outland cult that has found its way to the most northly part of Weyland.
Districts
The Castle, a large Motte and Bailey castle dominates Haeltors skyline and can be seen for many miles. The Keep is Home and Court of the Earl and his fmaily. The Garrison and the majority of the Earls retinue dwell in the somewhat large Bailey.
High Haeltor, sits on the upper parts of the hill surrounding the Motte and Baily Castle. Most of the wealthy citizens dwell here in large 2 to 3 story steep roofed houses.
Harbourside, is a large dockland district that contains ship yards and a sizeable fishing fleet. workshops, warehouses, fishing sheds, slum housing and some despicable tap houses are found here.
Free Market, a large goods and beast market operates daily. This district is surrounded by housing. Some decent Inns are found in the building around the Market as is an Ost Ale Hall.
Gateside, as you pass through the main gate to the city you pass through Gateside, numerous Inns are found residences, shops and small markets are found in the numeous courtyards. A large Rividian Style Bath House is found here and is popular with locals and travelers alike. The Church of the One God is found here and is also the residence of the Priest and a Monk who maitains the building and grounds.
Backend, is the poorest district of Haeltor and many of the lowest workers live in the tenements here. A Large stone Gaol is found in Backend and houses prisoners who are either too dangerous or not suitable to ework in the mines.
Other Places of Note
Ost Ale Hall, a massive Ost Longhouse where many celebrations and drinking occurs is found just off of the Free Market.
The Fallen Tower, once the home of the Society in Haeltor it has fallen in to ruin of recent years and is rumoured to harbour evil Spirits.
