Unpiloted Aerial Vehicles became a common form of civilian transport in the developed world around 2040. The UAVe app helped break down the fear of heights for the public, with an over 98% survival rate per fare!
UAV adoption had its critics in the beginning, who argued that the energy use would unacceptably accelerate Earth's Climate Collapse. The amount of material lifted into the air would be proportionally massive per passenger compared to traditional air flight. The counterarguments reasoned that avoiding traffic jams and terrestrial obstructions would reduce the length of the trip, leading to a safe and efficient trip.
Obvious bullshit. The UAV craze was an industrial bonanza for manufacturers, app developers, and investors. When it became blatantly obvious that carbon emissions were way worse with UAVs, they further argued that a greater proportion of CO2 in the atmosphere would make flight more energy-efficient because it's heavier than O2. Um, yeah, slightly.
Flashy technology. More waste and destruction. Great job, Capitalism. A glaring example of the perpetual swindle of Techno-Optimism.
