In a world of flying men and people who can teleport, it only makes sense that magic is real. The people who channel the powers of the arcane and divine are known as mages. These mages tug, tear, and twist the invisible net of magic that surrounds us all, they're able to shape reality to their whim. But not everyone can use magic, all mages in the world require something called a focus to help cast the powerful spells they know. For many, this comes in the form of a magical artefact of sorts, whether it be a ring, an amulet, a diadem, or something else. Each of these individual artefacts carry a specific power within them, with their wielder only able to cast a certain type of magic using it, causing mages to become artefact collectors. Though there are also some born with the ability to cast magic, while this magic is much more variable, it is also much more unstable, potentially causing harm to the caster.

While the arcane arts are a neutral skill, there are some magics that are infernal in origin, dark magic. These dark magics can summon demons from the underworld, or restore dead bodies to life to do the mage's bidding. Many of these dark mages form cults, giving artefacts to their most devout followers. Many seek out natural born mages who's body and blood is full of potent magical essence, able to be used for dark rituals.
