The Elemental Chaos is the domain of raw energy and magic, defined by chaos and unpredictability. It is dominated by a slowly swirling vortex of protomatter orbiting The Eye, where matter and energy are constantly being broken down and reformed. However there are planes within the Chaos with more stability, solidified through the will and power of mighty Primordials as well as other denizens of the Chaos. Within these realms a sort of order is maintained, often reflecting the nature of its creator and ruler.
The main planes include the Elemental Planes of Fire, Water, Earth, and Air that are each aligned with one of the four Pillars of Creation. The Pillars of Creation are towering eruptions of elemental energy that can be seen from anywhere in the Elemental Chaos. This energy flows up into the The Material World via rifts between the domains. These rifts coincide with features of the mortal world that have supreme elemental power. For example, the heart of every volcano contains a stable rift connecting it to the Elemental Plane of Fire. Mighty beings who can withstand the deadly forces of nature are able to pass between the domains via these rifts. Each of the four Primordials holds keep over one of the Pillars, and maintains a stable realm that extends for hundreds of miles from its base.
The Eye sits at the center of the Elemental Chaos, and within its event horizon are the Positive Energy Plane and the Negative Energy Plane. The Negative Plane has a massive gravitational pull and ingests everything that is pulled inside, tearing it apart. This then fuels the creation of new raw matter and energy in the Positive Plane, which erupts up through the Pillars of Creation. Visiting either is not a survivable experience.
There are also three other realms that are located atThe Eye just outside the event horizon:
- The Abyss: the realm of Demons who prey upon lost souls on their way to the Negative Plane. It was once an Outer Plane of The Astral Sea before being cast into the Elemental Chaos by the Archdevil Asmodeus.
- Pandemonium: an abandoned rocky realm known to drive visitors mad due to its constant howling winds
- Limbo: and inhospitable realm of ever shifting protomatter in which the secretive Githzerai prefer to make their home
