Yemon's Legacy

May 5, 2021

Magistrates at the Gate of Oni's Teeth asked for the magistrate's help in dealing with a strange traveler. His travel papers had been stamped by an Emerald Magistrate, but he appeared suspicious. Met Kaiu Joji and while his papers appeared to be well-made forgeries he eventually revealed that he had come to town due to the insistence of an ancestor of his, Kaiu Yemon, who he claimed was haunting him. Yemon's ghost had been summoned and questioned by a Mantis who was apparently meeting with someone that night in The Island Garden.

According to what Joji had been told by the ghost, Yemon had been hired to build some sort of mysterious vault or fortress in a location he had been taken to while blindfolded. He never knew any details about it or even the interior, just that he was hired to build the outer walls and spare no expense in constructing them as securely as possible. When he finished he was paid well, taken home, and then promptly kidnapped by an unknown man he only identified as a Shosuro based on his accent. After being tortured into drawing a map of his portion of the project, the man killed him.

The magistrates took Joji to the Licensed Quarter to keep an eye on him until the time of the meeting. While doing so the woman resembling Usagi Kamahime was spotted again. After she took off when addressed as such, they attempted to follow her, eventually seeing her enter a small building at the end of an alley identified only with a sign depicting a flower and snake. Mirumoto spoke briefly with a guard at the entrance, but declined to pursue her inside.

In the garden they came upon a small group discussing a map. At this Joji became animated and tried to intervene. This caused one of their number, a well-dressed young man, to stab a young woman in the throat while accusing her of a double cross. At the same time, an older woman took off running. Ichiro managed to wrestle the man to the ground while the woman fled, eventually leaping into the river and running across the waves themselves in the direction of the Leatherworker Quarter. Despite attempts to save her, the young woman died while gurgling something about a "map" and "crypt".

Questioning the man he revealed that 500 years ago his ancestor had sold a fortune in jade. He hired the shugenja Yogo Senko to raise Yemon's ghost in order to find out what he knew about it. That led him to the young woman, who is a descendant of Shosuro Sanzo, the man who tortured Yemon into drawing the map. He was meeting with her because she claimed to have knowledge of where the map could be found. Kasuga was disgusted with the man and that he would kill a woman over nothing more than money. Dragging him to the side yard of Swords Polished, he offered him the knife he had used to kill her and a final chance to reclaim some degree of honor.

Tracking down the Shosuro family crypt the magistrates found Yogo Senko lying dead on the floor in front of a door with several panels on it. Above the door was the question "What Is The Measure Of A Noble Soul?" with each panel bearing a different answer. After some deliberation Akodo pressed the panel stating "Its Lies", causing the door to open to the urn containing the ashes of Shosuro Sanzo. The ghost himself appearing before him and, after questioning why his grave was disturbed, entrusting Akodo with the map and charging him with its defense and that of the vault itself claiming that a terrible doom would befall Rokugan if it were ever to be opened.

The next morning the governor, Shosuro Hyobu, requested the presence of the magistrates. Alongside her chief magistrate, Yogo Osako, and daughter, Shosuro Kimi, she questioned them about the progress made in solving the thefts attributed to "The Wind" and was updated about their current efforts in bringing Fade to justice.

Returning home Ichiro's rival Bayushi Isamu came to respond and offered a challenge to settle the matter: a sumo match that would take place in about a week at the Garden and adjudicated by the Shosuro Jocho. Isamu is receiving the support of Bayushi Korechika in arranging the event and while in the city.
