Runestones

Thought to be naturally occurring deep within the earth, runestones are the core component of the Dwarvern constructs and companions known as the 'Rockfolk'. Runestones are a naturally occurring subterranean manifestation of the entity Og-Meddwl that passively generate a yet unknown form of psyonic beacon capable of luring in intelligent creatures and co-opting their thoughts in order to build a form and function for itself.

First discovered by Dwarf miners sometime during the first age, Runestones were originally considered an object of mild curiosity due to the unique markings found on runestones and the seemingly unique but inert magic embedded inside each such stone. However, some years following their initial finding, some dwarfs, most often craftsmen and early enchanters, discovered that runestones appeared to react when placed very near to acts of creation. At first, this finding was met with concern. While they were not commonplace, following their discovery and classification as being harmless miners had begun to circulate them throughout some dwarf settlements as tokens, minor gifts and, in some areas, a makeshift currency.

After much testing, it was confirmed that when used in the act of creation Runestones would attempt to embed themselves in the product, often resulting in a sturdier and embellished product than would normally be possible with the original materials. What should have been a commonplace axe may gain a much stronger and keener edge than ordinary iron, for example.
