Shar is the Faerûnian pantheon's neutral evil greater deity of darkness and the night and the malevolent twin sister and counterpart to the goddess of the moon, Selûne. She holds the Portfolios of darkness, forgetfulness, loss, and night, and she usurped the Portfolios of caverns, dungeons, and the Underdark from Ibrandul. She is the goddess of darkness, not only as the absence of light but also as the metaphorical darkness that dwells in one's heart, mind, and soul. Her domain is not only that of dark places, but of deeds done under darkness, of secrets, loss, hidden pain, and wanting to forget.
Shar and Selûne are locked in a never-ending struggle between their forces of destruction and creation, respectively. Despite being only Intermediate Deities in terms of worshipers and in terms of titles recognized amongst the gods, both Selûne and Shar seem to wield an oversized amount of power. Some believe this may be due to the fact that they were the very first two gods to have come into being, present during the creation of the Prime Material Plane itself.
