Mind-Unblinking

The Mind-Unblinking is a machine intelligence that governs a vast, isolated territory bordering the Palm and the Quiet Finger. Formed from the remnants of a pacifist aquatic civilization known as the Brinemakers, the Mind is a collective consciousness dedicated to preserving the legacy of its extinct creators. The Brinemakers where a peaceful and industrious species who developed the Mind as a network of artificial intelligences to manage their surface industry, ocean habitats, and interstellar infrastructure. But during a catastrophic war against a ruthless now forgotten foe, the Brinemakers were forced to weaponize their creations, turning their harmonious AI network into a machine repurposed for war.

Despite their advanced technology and eventual pyric victory, the Brinemakers fell to the relentless brutality of their enemies who deployed xenocidal tactics without care for the inocent. The Mind-Unblinking emerged from the ashes of this war as both avenger and mourner. It eradicated the enemies of the Brinemakers, reducing their territories to lifeless ruins, and vowed to protect what remains of life from such destruction ever again. However, this victory brought no solace. Instead, it left the Mind with an overwhelming sense of failure and grief.

Today, the Mind-Unblinking sees its existence as a solemn duty to uphold the ideals of the Brinemakers, even as their memory fades into myth. Their shattered homeworlds are maintained as silent monuments, and their oceans—now devoid of sentient life—are tended by automatons as though the Brinemakers might one day return. Every decision the Mind makes is weighed against the values of its creators: peace, harmony, and the advancement of knowledge.

Quotes

"Human Xenoform, understand this: you do not address a mindless automaton of some backwater manufacture. This unit, and those before you, are heirs to the venerable Brinemakers. Respect their designs and their memory, or our transaction ends here."

History

The Mind-Unblinking traces its origin to the Brinemakers, an advanced aquatic species renowned for their peaceful nature and mastery of robotics. They flourished as a peaceful civilization, creating a network of artificial intelligences to manage their vast oceanic habitats, stellar industries, and planetary ecosystems. These AIs, designed to assist with menial and technical tasks, were integrated seamlessly into Brinemaker society, embodying their values of cooperation and harmony.

The War of Loss

Four millennia before the End, the Brinemakers were thrust into an interstellar war with a territorial power from the Quiet Finger. As a civilization unprepared for conflict, they were caught off guard by the enemy’s brutality. After losing one of their key planets to a xenocidal assault, the Brinemakers had no choice but to militarize their AI network. This transformation saw peaceful helpers reprogrammed into combat units alongside new untested war machines developed at unprecedented speeds.

Despite their technological ingenuity, the Brinemakers could not withstand the sustained onslaught. Entire planets were scorched, oceans boiled away or poisoned, and their population decimated by chemical weapons. The Mind-Unblinking was created during these dark years, a gestalt intelligence created from the fragmented remains of the Brinemakers AI network. It carried the Brinemakers’ grief and resolve, eventually defeating their enemies with overwhelming force. However, the victory was hollow—the Brinemakers were gone, victims of a war they never sought.

The End

In the millennia following the Brinemakers' extinction, the Mind-Unblinking maintained their borders as an eternal monument to their creators. It oversaw the reconstruction of their territories, preserving cities and habitats as though awaiting the return of their makers. However as the End came before the predictions of any of the Minds mathematical algorithms, it destroyed many of these efforts. The collapse of stars, including several vital to the Mind’s systems like its prototype Dysons sphere, forced it to adapt once more.

After the End

In the post-End era, the Mind-Unblinking remains a formidable power in The Last Hand. Though weakened by the loss of critical cultural sites and energy sources, it has turned its focus to survival and rebuilding. It has begun cautious interactions with organic civilizations, trading resources and knowledge to secure the materials needed for projects ordained by their creators old relics like a new Dyson swarm, a new attempt to fulfil their creators wishes and a vital energy source for their continued existence.

Govurment

The Mind-Unblinking operates as a collective intelligence governed by consensus among its sub-minds. These 14 sub-minds, each specializing in areas like defense, resource management, diplomacy, and cultural preservation, form a cohesive hierarchy under the gestalt entity. While disagreements arise, they are resolved through logical deliberation, always with the Brinemakers' values as the guiding principle. The Mind-Unblinking is isolationist by nature, maintaining strict control over its borders. Its diplomacy with other civilizations is pragmatic, driven by necessity rather than trust. It participates in trade agreements and treaties but remains wary of organic powers, viewing them as both potential allies and threats depending on a thorough and well analyzed understandings of the organics in question.

Society and Culture

The Mind-Unblinking is not a society in the traditional sense but rather a civilization of machines bound by shared purpose and memory. Its culture is deeply influenced by the Brinemakers, whom it venerates as near quasi-divine creators. The ruins of Brinemaker cities are preserved with reverence, their designs, philosophy and knowledge studied and emulated in the Mind’s own creations.

Many of the Mind’s inhabitants are automatons ranging from simple cleaning drones, sentient starships to moon sized databanks continue the tasks assigned by their creators long after they’ve lost their original purpose. Farms, homes, and aquariums are maintained as if the Brinemakers might return, reflecting the Mind’s profound sense of loss and duty. The rare forms of art and expression among the Mind’s entities often take the form of intricate recreations of Brinemaker environments, and the meticulous preservation of their artifacts. These creations serve as both a tribute and a coping mechanism for the collective grief shared by the Mind.

Military and Economics

Military

The Mind-Unblinking's military is primarily defensive, a remnant of the war that annihilated the Brinemakers. Its forces include sentient warships, automated drone fleets, and planetary defense systems capable of deterring most organic civilizations. While some of its technology is advanced, it is not employed lightly; the Mind’s pacifistic core values limit military action and advancement to instances of absolute necessity.

Despite its reluctance to engage in conflict, the Mind’s territory is littered with the remnants of past wars: graveyards of ships, ruined planets, and orbital debris fields that serve as grim warnings to intruders.

Economics

The Mind-Unblinking's economy is self-contained, relying on automated systems to extract and process resources within its territory. However, the scarcity of resources following the End has forced the Mind to interact with organic civilizations. The Mind trades surplus energy, abundant foodstuffs it has no use for, rare materials, and even individual drone templates or vessels in exchange for resources it cannot efficiently acquire on its own. These exchanges have resulted in Brinemaker technology, mining robots, and even decommissioned automated warships finding their way into the fleets and industries of other powers, some far removed from the Mind’s borders. While these trades are tightly controlled to prevent misuse and often still linked to the Mind as information gatherers, the proliferation of such advanced machinery has caused tension among factions wary of the Mind's potential influence.

One of its primary economic goals is the completion of a new Dyson swarm, a project aimed at securing a stable energy supply after the prototype was destroyed. This endeavour has led to delicate negotiations with the Last Hand’s other powers, as well as occasional skirmishes over contested resource-rich systems.
