Forming the western edge of the Kingdom of Kalvete, Bruttstrond is home to Kalvete's dense taiga forests. The countless trees that blanket this Hold provide ample lumber to the Kingdom, and the forests hold countless remnants of Kalvete's violent history. Despite the region's resources and historical significance, it does hold its fair share of dangers in the form of rebel groups hiding within its woodlands. Even with these dangers, Bruttstrond has played a crucial role in the Kingdom's establishment and continues to provide for the nation today.

Bruttstrond's shield is divided into green and black sections, which serve as the Hold's official colors. Much like the Kingdom's shield, the two axes behind the shield symbolize the nation's strength.

Cities and Towns

The dense forests of Bruttstrond hold multiple settlements within it, many of which hold significance in Kalvete's history. Below are these settlements.

  • Skógaustr: Skógaustr is the capital of Bruttstrond, sitting in the center of the Hold. An expansive logging city, Skógaustr is surrounded by multiple regions of dense taiga, such as the Draulog Forest, that the people of the city harvest from. The city also holds great historical significance, as it is the oldest city in all of Kalvete. As Bruttstrond was the last region to be conquered during the Marsigur Wars, Skógaustr feels notably different than many other cities in the Kingdom due to its differing architecture. This history comes with danger, however, as many rebel groups still loyal to the Black Jarl still hide within the surrounding taiga.
  • Fjarrlund: Fjarrlund is a small logging village in southwestern Bruttstrond. The village lies within some of the densest woodlands in the entire Hold, making it feel more isolated than it really is. Aside from its logging industry, the village also sees success in hunting wildlife and mining ores in the Skyfract Mountains to the south. Outside of the village, ruins from before even the Cataclysm lie hidden and overgrown by the taiga. While life is mostly quiet in Fjarrlund, its proximity to the Iron Strait and Tualean Island have led to rumors about Vampires in the area.
  • Hafflóa: Situated at the mouth of the Haffíngi River in northeastern Bruttstrond, Hafflóa is a somewhat small but growing port town. Being located on the shores of the North Sea, its ports connect Bruttstrond to various other Holds in the Kingdom and is crucial in some of the region's most important trade routes. As these trade routes and the town's fishing industry grows, Hafflóa is poised to develop into quite the large city in the near future.
  • Endaná: Endaná is Bruttstrond's youngest settlement, being a small village near the far northern tip of the Northern Finger. Its northern location subjects Endaná to very harsh weather, being pelted by snow and ice for many parts of the year. This has caused the village some struggle in its growth, as its economy is limited to harvesting resources from arctic wildlife. Despite the difficulties of life here, the people of Endaná make life work.

Geography and Points of Interest

Bruttstrond's dense taiga hides a rich history within it, leading to the Hold having many secrets to discover.

Bruttstrond encompasses a large peninsula known as the Northern Finger, which frames the western edge of the North Sea and the entire Kingdom. Nearly all of the Hold is covered in a thick blanket of coniferous trees, with the region's settlements and roads carving through it. These developments have caused the taiga to be divided into patches such as the Draulog Forest, all of which are vast stretches of untamed and unforgiving wilderness. The density of these woodlands has shaped the Hold's economy, with logging being the biggest industry by far. These dense forests, however, begin to disappear at the Hold's northern and southern ends. To the south, the rocky Skyfract Mountains rise high above the taiga. In the north, the trees give way to frigid, snow-covered tundra. This variety gives Bruttstrond one of the most diverse landscapes in all of Kalvete.

Bruttstrond has little waterways of note within its borders, with the only navigable river being the Haffíngi. Its mouth is home to the Hold's only port of Hafflóa, and the Hold's capital of Skógaustr was built along its banks. The Haffíngi, as well as the Brúna River at Bruttstrond's border, flow into the North Sea to the northeast. These waterways all serve to connect Bruttstrond with other Holds in the Kingdom, playing a major role in the local economy. To the west, however, the waters of the Great Abyss and Iron Strait create a stark contrast. Turbulent and stormy, these waters instead prevent any meaningful ports to be established, rendering Bruttstrond's western coast barren and undeveloped.

As Bruttstrond was the final region of Kalvete that was conquered during the Marsigur Wars, countless remnants of the conflict lie overgrown within the taiga. Weapons and armor of fallen soldiers sit infested with mosses and lichen, scattered about the abandoned framework of villages whose inhabitants are long gone. Despite the peace that all of Kalvete finds itself in today, Bruttstrond remains covered in scars that remind of the struggle for this new age. As such, this Hold is home to some of the richest history across the entire Kingdom.

Economy and Politics

Bruttstrond's economy relies fully on its lumber industry, with nearly all of the Hold's cities and towns being originally established for logging. The density of the region's forests provides for local business and the Hold's exports, with a majority of the Kingdom's lumber resources originating from Bruttstrond. While the logging industry makes up the majority of Bruttstrond's economy, the Hold does harvest other resources such as those from mining and hunting. These additional industries have led to Bruttstrond having one of the most diverse economies of any Hold, which has greatly contributed to the young Kingdom's growth.
