Mask of Fear

“Don’t worry, my new friend. I will share your burden with you.”
~ Kanvrak the Demon

The Mask of Fear is a magic +1 shield given power by the demon Kanvrak that resides within it. The shield is powerful, but is cursed so that one who takes hold of it cannot let it go.

Description

A large shield made from dark steel, fashioned into the shape of a dimensional face with jagged edges and demonic qualities. When the magic of the shield is active, a small fire burns from within.

Effects

As a bonus action on your turn, you invoke the name of the demon’s soul trapped within the shield, “Kanvrak”. The demon lashes out at those in a 15 foot cone with wild and terrifying illusions, and each creature within the range must make a Wisdom saving throw of DC 15 or become frightened for 1 minute. Affected creatures may repeat this save at the end of each turn, overcoming their fear on a successful save.

Curse

When a creature touches the shield, they become unable to part with it. If a user attempts to do so, they must make a DC 20 Wisdom save, or become violently unwilling to drop it. A cursed user will share their sight and hearing with the demon Kanvrak, who may also speak through their mouth as he pleases. This shield may be removed with a Remove Curse spell, but only if a significant offering is made to Kanvrak. A Greater Restoration spell or higher requires no such offering.

History

Ilryn Dewsong purchased the Mask of Fear from Garash the Dealmaker in 989 IaC, touching it soon after. She was immediately transported to a mental plane where she met the demon Kanvrak, who spoke to her of his ability to see and hear through her, and even speak.
