Vetraxu

The Spinning Devil

Vetraxu is a devil hailing from the Whirling Fires that works as an information broker and a leader against the loyalists of Etarus. She currently inhabits the form of a tiefling woman, though her true form is unknown. She functions as the leader of the devils working in and around Madrioc, and has become something of an leader for many of the devils that lost their purpose following Etarus' death. Her actual body lies imprisoned somewhere in the hellish planes.

Description

Appearance

While in her mortal form, Vetraxu appears as a tall tiefling woman with deep blue skin and long, dark hair. She wears light leather vestments that are mostly obscured by a large trenchcoat. Various daggers and tool are held in the numerous straps and pockets across her clothes. She carries a large red greatsword on her back.

Personality

Vetraxu is a cunning and manipulative individual, but harbors and deeply buried kindness and passion for her people, who she believes have been subjugated and abused by the greater devils. Vetraxu will use whatever is at her disposal in order to reach her goals, and is not above trickery and deception if it meets her needs. She easily slips into different personas in order to disarm others, but won't continue to patronize them with falsities if they see through her lies.

Skills and Abilities

Vetraxu is an excellent leader and is a skilled information broker, commanding a legion of devil spies in Gessaria and beyond. She is rather charming and silver-tongued, and can often convince others to give up their secrets willingly.

Additionally, Vetraxu is a skilled fighter, entering the fray with her vampiric greatsword, cursed with her own devil's blood. In battle, she moves swiftly and silently, striking with assassinating blows and using her throwing knives to cripple opponents on the battlefield.

History

Vetraxu was originally a devil under the rule of the archdevil Etarus, and for untold millennia was forced to do his bidding in the hellish planes. Vetraxu's consciousness was eventually pulled out of hell and implanted into a tiefling woman around the 920s IaC, and she began working to bring Etarus into the Material plane. Noticing that Gessaria had promise, she made a trip to the continent from Atavar, eventually settling down in Madrioc and establishing an information network. During this time, her desire to slip out of the chains that bound her to Etarus was enflamed, and she secretly began plotting about how to overthrow Etarus and free the devils.

When the host of Etarus, Wander, appeared in Madrioc in 951, Vetraxu attempted to seize the chance, allowing him to discover her lair of operations. Wander eventually met briefly in the back of One-Eyed Woody's, where Vetraxu confirmed her suspicions that Etarus was no longer in control of him. She urged Wander to use his position to free the devils bound to Etarus, teaching him a special ritual that would allow him to see if a body was hosting a devil. She also tried to convince him to conduct a ritual that she promised would "further seal" Etarus away, but Wander declined. Vetraxu arranged to meet up with him again soon, but he skipped town before she got the chance.

As the actions of the Peas inadvertently began to set the plans of the devils in motion, Vetraxu began working to organize the devils that wished to be free against Etarus, but was careful to keep her sabotage secret. Eventually, a small, secret war broke out in the underground of Madrioc when Etarus' loyalists discovered her artifice. Vetraxu was forced to reach out to some of the factions of Madrioc for assistance, revealing herself as a devil but hoping to leverage her position with information about Etarus' plans. While she was not detained by the city, she was watched very closely after the conflicts were brought to a close.

Vetraxu joined Madrioc's crusade against the dragon Zahast the Vilespawn later in the year, leading a suicide squad of devils into the depths of the Nightspell Marches to configure one of Renbedar Uleshan's stabilizing beacons. Vetraxu hoped that upon her success, she would be able to move more freely within the city and resume her crusade against Etarus. Before her departure she spoke to Wander about Etarus, discovering that the actions of Aeltra had sealed him away deeply within his mind. While this amused Vetraxu, she asserted that Etarus' devils would likely continue their work regardless. Vetraxu was successful in her mission and arrived back in Madrioc days later after Zahast's defeat, tired but alive.

At Wander's request, Vetraxu and her growing legion of devils joined in the Battle for the Sun, taking point near the vanguard and pushing the frontline towards the Shadow Fort. She later returned to Madrioc and joined in on a celebration at Dragon's End following the Nightseeker's defeat.

Vetraxu continued to work with the devils of Gessaria, collecting many more followers after word of Etarus' death began to spread.
