The series of unnatural earthquakes climaxed, fracturing the earth near Waterdeep and exposing a third, final vault—the deepest and most ancient yet. A smoking, gaping maw in the earth that dwarfed the previous fissures now glowed an ominous red.
Guildmaster Demit was exhausted, his voice raw as he delivered the dire warning: "The artifact is down there, the last one: the Rod of Command. It's the key. Fail to secure it, and Asmodeus will have what he needs for his ritual. Our scouts report a massive fiendish presence—they're desperate. This is likely a one-way trip, but you're the only ones who can stop this."
The party gathered at the rim, where the air was stiflingly hot and thick with sulfur. As they prepared to descend into the crumbling, narrow shaft, their chaotic start was ensured by the appearance of Urukh, who, again fleeing from Aeris, panicked and jumped headlong into the chasm.
The party followed, eventually finding Urukh in a large, ancient assembly chamber. They healed the terrified postal courier and, with great difficulty, managed to send him back toward the surface.
The assembly chamber offered three chaotic paths deeper toward the artifact:
The paths converged at a final, intricately carved portal sealed by a complex, clockwork device. The lock required the input of the three virtues Asmodeus's minions believe are paramount: Tyranny, Order, and Corruption, in the correct hierarchical sequence. The riddle read: "The Crown rules the Chain, but the Chain allows the Wound to fester. The power of the first must equal the product of the last two."
The party entered the final chamber—the Throne Chamber, a small, intensely hot room built to resemble a minor throne room. The Rod of Command rested on a dias, guarded by the highest-ranking devil in the expedition: a ferocious Pit Fiend Envoy, the supreme commander of the entire operation. His minions, Bone Devils and Chain Devils, were also present, along with a furious Balor that seemed to be attacking the Pit Fiend Envoy.
