Loslow, of low birth has risen to one of the most powerful positions in the palace. He is the head of the Silent Chanters, who know the secret silent chant that keeps Songborne and the sky barges afloat. All Silent Chanters loose their voice in the initiation ritual having their throat cut out apart from the Head Chanter and their apprentice who will go on to become Head Silent Chanter When they die. They keep their voice to communicate directly with the Emperor and more easily instruct the others in the brotherhood over which as head of their order they have dominion.
