The Palace Kitchens are situated in their own building in one of the palace's larger courtyards this is due to minimising the risk of a fire starting in the kitchen and spreading to other parts of palace. The court yard is paved and free of plants - again to act as a firebreak. The entrance to the Cold Stores is also in the kitchens for again if a fire starts it will not burn into the catacombs of Order of the Silent Chanters who keep the palace afloat. The only other thing in the courtyards are fish ponds from which fresh fish can be taken to be cooked for guests of the Inner Imperial Chamber and Outer Imperial Chambers. The kitchen does not of course feed the common folk who are catered for in the Servants Quarter

The kitchens have towering ceilings to disperse heat and smoke and add ventilation. Specially bred miniature rat catching Kengar flap around, the curse of the rodents of the palace.

Mechanical spits developed by the Tongs in the House of Time turn great slabs of meat over a roaring fire at the far end of the kitchens. The same institution invented the steam closets along the left wall that are capable of keeping many dishes warm whilst not drying them out.

Over a hundred workers busy themselves around the kitchens many with very specific roles from spice grinder to saucier.

Along the right had wall is a shrine to Zera thanking her for her bounty and giving her a share of the kitchens wealth burning it upon the small altar of the shrine.
