The Newlandic Commonwealth is a republic which once sat between the Byuntun, Siaatian, and Mernelian Empires, though in the modern day it is completely surrounded by Pelegon.
Newland was founded after the Newlandic Revolution, a slave revolt led by Unknown.
Sitting between three major empires, the small republic was able to survive by playing the major powers off of each other and through the adoption of banking. Newland is the banking capital of Yekare and if its sovereignty is ever infringed, several nations will come to its aid to protect their assets. Newland took a neutral stance in the Pelegonic Conquest and maintained its independence by threatening to ship its gold reserves off-continent and crash the continent's economy.
Despite the power of the Newlandic Bank, Newland remains a fiercely democratic nation. Strong democratic institutions, both formal and informal, help prevent corruption. Additionally, all employees of the Newlandic Bank are forbidden from voting or holding office, an attempt by the democratic government to prevent the overreach of the Bank. Beyond banking, Newland is a cultural, scholarly, and artistic center.
All nonevil religions are accepted in Newland, but the most dominant faiths are those of Beld, Sha, Vessia, Odion and Vir.
When Beaudelaire became High Magister, he set aside his surname as a statement of his service and dedication to the democratic principles of the republic and its people. This practice has continued since his term ended. High Magisters, Magisters, and even bank employees cast aside their family names when they take office.
As the largest bank in the world, the Newlandic Bank has branches all across Yekare, which gives the Commonwealth a keen eye into the affairs of other nations.
The High Magister of Newland is elected from the people for a term of ten years, nonrenewable.
