Bloodwood sap is the sap of Bloodwood trees. It is a viscous red-black fluid with a harsh metallic taste.

Bloodwood sap is among the most dangerous poisons known to man. A single drop ingested is enough to kill a fully grown man. The effect manifests over the course of an hour, with the victim bleeding out of the eyes, nose, ears, penis/vagina, anus, and from beneath the finger and toenails. The process is excruciating and eventually leads to death by either shock from the pain or blood loss. The poison is invariably fatal when ingested. Physical contact with bloodwood sap causes severe burns to appear over the course of an hour and for the skin of the exposed area to slough off until muscle and bone are exposed. This effect does not wear off and slowly spreads to the rest of the body, requiring immediate amputation lest the exposed victim die. Ironically, bloodwood sap can be harmlessly placed in the mouth, as long as all of it is spit out. Scholars believe that saliva temporarily neutralizes the poison’s effect. Indeed, it has been demonstrated that if bloodwood sap is exposed to saliva (in a ratio of roughly 1:30 favoring the saliva) it is neutralized permanently. As such, some daredevils are known to charm crowds by swishing bloodwood sap in a display not dissimilar to swordswallowing or firespitting. Though some naysayers allege that these performers utilize sap which has already been neutralized as part of their act.

Bloodwood sap is rare, as it can only be sourced from living Bloodwood trees and those can only be found in the Wailing Wood of the Shadowfell. This makes it one of the most expensive substances, let alone poisons, known to man.

Inhabitants of the Wailing Wood are known to coat their arrows in bloodwood sap, spelling certain doom for any who are even grazed on the finger by one.
