Session 024 (Level 4) Clear the Caer

18 de noviembre de 2025
  • While the party took a short rest to repair and heal up Benethyk Portadel explained what he knew about fighting and casting in water. Fire spells won't work. Most ranged weapons don't work well and have reduced range.
  • The party descended the circular staircase in the southwest corner, immersing themselves into the dark, cold water. Benethyk pulls out a wand with Continual Flame going, so the group can see.
  • As they emerge from the stairwell into the cellar they see that the walls are lined with tables and bookshelves. There is a hallway opening to their right, past what appears to be a 10x10 torture cell. In the middle of the floor in the lab is a glowing sigil and four bodies are laying on the floor on and around the symbol.
  • Just after Benethyk exits the stairwell the group hears what sounds like mumbling under water. Rook hears "Totet sie ALLE!" whispered. At this point, four Zombies awkwardly rise from the floor and begin to shamble toward the party.
  • INITIATIVE!
  •   Askelon fires a Necrotic Bolt that tears through one of the Zombies.
  • Hjalgrimm steps up and slams his blade into a Zombie, then finishes it off with another strike.
  • Rook steps up and damages a Zombie.
  • Zombies land a few punches.
  • Faelon takes out a Zombie with a Flurry of Blows.
  • The party hears "Wer wagt es, mein Labor zu betreten und meine Waren anzufassen?" Benethyk translates "Who dares enter my laboratory and touch my wares?" They hear what sounds like the casting of a spell, the a bunch of black tentacles sprout from the floor, attacking the party.
  • Askelon drops his Wither and Bloom to hit Mearkis Rotsteiner, Deathlock and the remaining Zombies.
  • The party finishes off the Zombies.
  • Hjalgrimm advances on the Deathlock and slams it with his Bukrai Blade.
  • The Deathlock tries to escape, but finds his movement hindered by the water.
  • Faelon and Rook attack the Deathlock before he can get into the stairwell, destroying it.
  • Hjalgrimm heals the damaged party members.
  • The party carefully searches the room. They take the fancy Vest, Cane, and Lens off of the Deathlock, along with a Pouch with 18PP, 136GP, 27SP, and 2 Sapphire Gems (50GP ea). Benethyk points out Alchemist's Supplies (50GP) and Calligrapher's Supplies (10GP). He takes a Spellbook, 3 Research Books, and 6 Scroll Cases. The rest is trash.
  • The party explores the rest of the cellar, finding the vault doors and the other cells. They collect four kegs and put them into the Bag of Holding. Everything else is trash.
  • The party tries to open a vault door, but it does not budge. They use the key that the Embalmer provided them, which fits in the keyhole and makes a click when turned. Hjalgrimm pulls on the door but it seems to be stuck. Faelon steps up and helps, and they yank the door open. The sudden influx of water from the cellar into the vault causes the Khuzdul to tumble in and smash up against the wall. Faelon manages to negotiate the tumbling torrent and lands gracefully. They find that this first vault has probably been looted a long time ago.
  • The nameplate on the stone coffin says Sir Bulwar Burzada, Seneschal to King Shobald of Shosel, who died of wounds incurred during the battle for Burzyn. They lift the lid off of the coffin. This vault has apparently been looted. Sir Bulwar's skeleton lies in the open stone coffin, missing two fingers and two cranial vertebrae.
  • They repeat the unlock and open door routine, this time more carefully. Vault 2 has Sir Lutak Shobald, the king's nephew, who was killed in the battle for Burzyn. The skeleton still wears a Clan Shobald Signet ring and a  Chain of Office. The party decides to leave those alone.
  • Vault 3: Dame Lilena Shobald, Lutak's wife. Her skeleton wears a gold and platinum ring with a Ruby and a gold and emerald necklace with a drop pearl. They take the jewelry.
  • Vault 4: Synem Burzada, personal bodyguard to the king, who was killed in the battle for Burzyn defending his liege valiantly. He was a Drughu, adopted into the family for valorous deeds. He holds a Khuzdul mastercrafted Greatsword. Hjalgrimm examines the sword and they take it.
  • The party leaves the cellar. Benethyk uses Prestidigitation to dry out the party members and himself. They return triumphantly to the Blue Horse Inn. Benethyk requests the private room, and is indulged.
  • The wizard pays the party for their services as promised - 120pp. He lays out the books and scroll cases to start drying them out and examining them. Askelon tells Benethyk that he would like to have the opportunity to learn from the spellbook if that is possible. Benethyk declares that it will take some time to restore these books, if they can be saved.
  • The party evaluates their loot and estimates values. Ruby ring - 85gp, necklace - 165gp, greatsword - 150gp, Khuzdul Whiskey - 250gp, Sindarin wine - 400gp, Stout beer - 10gp, ale - 10gp, Alchemy kit - 50gp, Calligraphy kit - 10gp. Hjalgrimm's careful examination of the sword reveals the mark of Clan Klarazhal, the royal weaponsmiths of Azadmere, which could increase the sales value to 300gp to the right buyer. Askelon determines that the black smoking jacket with elaborate gold trim and unicorn motif, the cane sword, the pipe pommel, and the lens are all magic, but have no properties. It seems that they have an enchantment matrix, but no spells imbued.
  • Rhyna and Weyliri join the group, and food and drink is delivered.
  • Benethyk read the group the story of Mearkis Rotsteiner Rotsteiner, the wizard who turned into a Deathlock, that the party defeated.
