Temple of Lathander

Sanctuary of Lathander, Lord of the Morning

Location:

Nestled in the heart of Lygos, the Temple of the Dawnbringer rises above the terracotta rooftops like a crown of gold and rose quartz. It is the second largest temple in Lygos, a beacon of light and warmth that draws faithful and curious alike—especially during the sunrise ceremonies, which are popular for both their beauty and spiritual weight.

While not as architecturally grand or ancient as the Temple of Selune across town, it rivals its lunar counterpart in devotion, attendance, and ambition. The two temples enjoy a non-violent rivalry—their festivals subtly try to outshine one another, their sermons subtly reference each other’s flaws, and their priests engage in polite theological debates that are equal parts faith and politics.

Architecture & Atmosphere:

The temple is built in concentric circles, radiating outward from a central dome, designed to mirror the rising sun.

Stained glass murals dominate the structure—glorious mosaics of Lathander’s golden chariot, fields blooming under morning light, and the rebirth of heroes bathed in radiance.

At dawn, the temple erupts in color as sunlight filters through the glass, creating shifting patterns across the polished marble floor.

The air smells faintly of incense, roses, and sun-warmed linen.

There is an open-roof sun garden where faithful gather for silent meditation or to bask in the light, believing it enhances healing and renewal.

High Priest: Klarion Faelrune

A sun elf of noble bearing and serene demeanor, Klarion Faelrune transferred from Waterdeep nearly 50 years ago.

Despite his long tenure, many still refer to him as “the outsider priest,” especially among older locals who value Lygos-born clergy.

Klarion is calm, articulate, and devout, with a voice like dawn itself—soft at first, but capable of blazing fire when stirred.

He is not political, but he understands that his position holds influence beyond the pulpit.

He has a zeal for renewal—of individuals, communities, and even broken institutions—and believes Lathander’s light should shine in every alley and under every roof.

Temple Culture & Activities:

Dawn services draw large crowds—locals say the stained glass “makes your soul bloom.”

The temple often hosts blessing rituals for births, weddings, and major undertakings (new businesses, homes, even adventuring parties).

There is an artist’s enclave on the temple grounds—painters, musicians, and poets offer their talents to honor Lathander through creation.

Clerics and paladins of the temple patrol Lygos at dusk and dawn—not as guards, but as symbols of hope and vigilance.

There is a quiet but ongoing effort to outdo Selûne's temple in popularity, especially through community outreach, charity, and spectacle.

Relationship with the Temple of Selûne:

The two temples reflect the natural balance of sun and moon—and also quietly compete over who reflects it best.

During eclipses or solstices, the two temples may host dueling ceremonies across the river from each other, each claiming deeper symbolism and truth.

Faithful of both temples often attend both services, but carry subtle affiliations—sunbursts for Lathander, crescent pendants for Selûne.

Klarion and Esmeray maintain a publicly cordial relationship, but their interactions are always just a little too polite.
