A Theater Born from Scrap & Stubborn Dreams

Tucked between leaning tenements and creaky wooden walkways in the Plank District, The Driftwood Theater is hardly a theater at all—once a run-down storehouse, the space has been haphazardly converted into a makeshift performance hall. The “stage” is a collection of old wooden pallets nailed together, the curtains stolen from an abandoned merchant stall, and the seats are just planks stacked over barrels. Despite its rough appearance and barebones setup, it is home to some of the most passionate performers in Lygos.

The Gutterstars, the theater’s ragtag troupe, juggle their real jobs by day—dockhands, barmaids, street performers, and beggars—but by night, they transform into actors, poets, and musicians, hoping to one day perform in the grand halls of the Palace District.

The Struggles of the Driftwood

Cheap Shows, Rowdy Crowds: The Driftwood is known for charging pennies for entry, meaning it attracts everyone from eager dreamers to drunken hecklers. Fights breaking out in the middle of a performance are not uncommon.

Actors with Day Jobs: Most of the troupe work hard, exhausting jobs, only to rehearse in the dead of night, driven by passion over profit.

The City Watch Doesn’t Care: The Palace District has high art; the Plank District has a fire hazard filled with shouting drunks. The Watch only intervenes when things get really bad.

Competing with the Brothels & Bars: The Driftwood struggles to lure in patrons when cheap booze and easy pleasures are just a few streets away.

The Troupe: The Gutterstars

Though underpaid and underappreciated, the Gutterstars are dedicated performers, keeping hope alive in the grimy heart of Lygos.

Marvolio "Marv" Fennwick (Halfling Playwright & Actor, Leader of the Troupe)

A fast-talking, ever-optimistic halfling with a dramatic flair and a thin mustache he’s very proud of.

Writes all of their plays—most of which are either tragic romances or ridiculous comedies (often both).

Keeps morale high, no matter how bad the night goes. He firmly believes one day, they’ll make it big.

The Shows: A Mix of Art & Chaos

The Driftwood Theater’s plays are a blend of ambition and barely-controlled disaster.

"The Prince & The Plank" – A tragic tale of forbidden love between a noble and a dockhand, featuring actual sword fights (sometimes unplanned).

"The Laughing Pirate’s Curse" – A chaotic pirate comedy, infamous for having no fixed script—it changes based on the audience’s mood and the actors’ drunkenness.

"Kingdom of Fools" – A satire mocking corrupt nobles (banned from the Palace District, popular in the slums).

Most performances end with:

·       A standing ovation, or

·       A fistfight, or

·       A fire breaking out, or

·       All three at once.

Adventure Hooks & Story Opportunities

"A Star is Born?" – One of the Gutterstars has been invited to perform at a noble’s private event—but is it an opportunity, or a trap?

"The Show Must Go On!" – On the night of their biggest performance, half the cast is missing. The players must step in and act or risk the show collapsing.

"A Rival Theater?" – A wealthy patron wants to buy out and demolish the Driftwood. Do the players help the troupe resist, or is there another way to save the theater?

"A Play with Dangerous Secrets" – Marv accidentally wrote a play based on real, hidden corruption in Lygos. Powerful people don’t want it performed.

Final Thoughts

The Driftwood Theater is a symbol of resilience, proving that even in the poorest part of Lygos, dreams refuse to die. While its actors struggle by day and perform by night, each show brings laughter, drama, and hope—even if it occasionally ends in a brawl.

Troupe Members

Callista Moorland (Human Actress, Dreamer, and Tavern Worker)

The star actress of the Gutterstars, tough but poetic, and moonlights as a barmaid to pay her rent.

Will fight hecklers herself if they interrupt her performance.

Secretly writes her own plays but is too shy to share them.

Lurgo the Loud (Half-Orc Strongman, Comedic Actor)

A dock worker by day, performer by night, Lurgo is massive but gentle, specializing in comedic roles.

Terrible at remembering lines but great at improvising, much to Marv’s frustration.

Secretly wants to be a serious actor and will always volunteer for romantic roles, despite being deeply unconvincing.

"Whistles" Rennick (Gnome Musician, Acrobat, and Troublemaker)

A flute player, juggler, and acrobat, usually covered in dirt and mischief.

Steals props from nobles’ garbage, believing in "waste not, want not."

Has a bounty on his head for playing insulting songs about corrupt merchants.
