Dorcas Frye is an imposing and enigmatic figure who, in spite of his advanced age, still strikes fear in the young and discomfort in adults. His mighty hound, the black-maned Monster Joe, is his legendary silent shadow, never leaving his side and ready to do his bidding with unmatched ferocity. The beast watches over Dorcas’ junkyard, after whom it was named, keeping away the curious, the homeless and other unwanted strangers.
