Homebrew

Shadovar, or shades, look just like normal humanoids, although their skin is gray to inky black, as are their eyes, and they typically have black shade emanating off them at all times. They are thinner than most humans, and they prefer to dress in dark-hued clothes or armor. It is unknown how the first Shadovar came to be, but most say they are normal beings who experimented too far with black magic, and thus became corrupt. Shadovar produce shadovar offspring, simply with the characteristics of the other parent combined with shadow essence, producing a baby shadovar.

The Shadovar have a longstanding rivalry with the Krinth.

Shades have extraordinarily long lifespans. By trading some portion of their souls for the stuff of shadow, they extend their lifespan tenfold.

Shadovar Traits

As a shadovar, you have the following racial traits.

  • Ability Score Increase. When determining your character’s ability scores, your Dexterity score increases by 2 and you increase a different score by 1. You can't raise any of your scores above 20.
  • Age. Shades do not age, or at the very least no one has ever seen a shade die or grow weathered from age.
  • Alignment. Shades interact with evil but lean towards being neutral.
  • Size. Any size they had in life.
  • Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
  • Magical Darkvision. Accustomed to the night, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. Additionally, you can see through magical darkness by up to 30 ft.
  • Undead Nature. You have both the Undead type and the Humanoid type. You have advantage on saving throws you make to avoid or end the poisoned condition on yourself, and you have resistance to poison damage. You do not need to eat, sleep, drink, or breathe. Instead of sleeping, you just sit completely still for at least 4 hours, fully conscious, waiting for your damage to heal. After doing this for at least 4 hours of this, you gain the benefits of a long rest.
  • Shade Step. As a bonus action, you can magically turn invisible by turning into shadow essence until the start of your next turn or until you attack, make a damage roll, or force someone to make a saving throw. Once you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
  • Krinth Slayer. You have a +1 on attack rolls against someone of the Krinth race.
  • Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common, either Abyssal or Infernal, and one other language of your choice.
