Kalakeri Crossroads Campaign Guide

A caravan is transporting an important religious artifact across the Backwaters to the capital of Jadurai. You were told by General Kayaga, the Loyalist general appointed by Ramya herself who assigned you all to the mission, that it was of the utmost importance the artifact was safely delivered to the Cerulean Citadel. So you, as a member of Ramya's Loyalist militia (whether willingly enlisted, forcibly conscripted, or serving to escape execution), have been stationed to guard it as it travels from any threats.

You will be starting in the outskirts of the loyalist city of Banyan, where the caravan starts its journey to Jadurai (if you're curious, you can see these places on the Map of Kalakeri on the dashboard, or by opening the full entry and clicking explore).

Setting

The setting will be Kalakeri (read about the setting at this link), the link to which can be found on the dashboard as well.

What You NEED to Know about the Oneshot/Setting

  • The war between the heirs of the Vasavadan dynasty has been ongoing for as long as everyone remembers, and though there are numerous champions of the cause, there are also many people who choose a side simply to survive and not be labeled as a traitor to both.
  • More of a note for anyone wanting to make a religious character: the gods in this world are worshipped but unreachable, any spell that would reach them simply fails. Many think they abandoned the world once the war between the heirs began, though worship has been known to still give miracles to a rare few (for example, your spells if you are a cleric or paladin of a god would be a rare, great miracle).

My House Rules

Every GM has their list of house rules, though I don't have many. Here's mine:

  • When drinking a healing potion, you can choose to drink it with an action instead of a bonus action and take the maximum amount of healing offered by the potion.
  • Death saves are rolled behind the GM screen (by you) so that just the GM and the player who's dying know how close to death they are.
  • We'll be using a modified standard array for determining ability scores. The modified standard array is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8. you gain a +2 bonus to an ability score depending on the Core Ability of your class (generally either Strength or Dexterity for martials, or your spellcasting ability score for spellcasters). Then, apply your species bonus normally (if using a 2014 species, use the 2024 way of determining bonuses to stats).

Some of these I am pretty set in keeping, but if there is a house rule you really don't like please say something and we can work on changing/removing it!

Favor Token

At the beginning of the oneshot, you will start with one token that you can expend (called "calling in a favor") by handing it to the GM for a free reroll on any d20 Test, rerolling with advantage/disadvantage if you had advantage/disadvantage respectively on the initial roll. If you roll lower than 10 on the reroll, it automatically becomes a 10 plus any bonuses that would be added..

When you roll a natural 1, natural 20, or the GM determines it appropriate, you gain your token back if you do not already have it but cannot use it on the roll that gave you back the token (if applicable).

Character Creation in Kalakeri

If you want to look at homebrew/3rd party content I allow, use the God's Guide Dashboard to find the links to classes, subclasses and races. Otherwise, you can choose any class, subclass or species in 2024 and most in 2014 (as long as they're not really specific to the Faerun setting, like Kender or Gith), which you can find easily on the 2024 Wikidot page or the 2014 Wikidot page.

This campaign starts at 3rd level, so you will be starting with your subclass right out of the gate.

For a general step-by-step guide that leads you through character creation, go to this link: Step-by-Step Character Creation

Additionally, the following options are either Thematic for the adventure or are New options to choose from not in normal rules:

Thematic Race Options

  • Dragonborn (Wyvern-flavored instead of Dragon)
  • Human
  • Reborn
  • Tiefling (any legacy, though Cthonic could work if associated with the Loyalists and Abyssal/Infernal could work if associated with the Rebels)
  • Yuan-Ti (typically known as Nagaborn in Kalakeri, they have been showing up from the Rebel-controlled town of Veena recently without much memory of why other than being hatched underground. This is 2014 content, but it should work just fine. Use the 2024 version of Poison Spray and Animal Friendship since it offers to 2014 version.)
  • Any other race/species from the 2024 rules works just fine as they are all found in Kalakeri, and if none of those interest you, you can choose from the 2014 races/species as well.
