The War of Independence was a major conflict fought between the First Eternal Imperium of Valdros and the western provinces that would eventually become known as the kingdom of Westreach. The war remains one of the most significant events in the history of both nations and continues to influence politics, culture, and relations throughout the regions centuries after its conclusion.
Before the War
Prior to the conflict the lands now known as Westreach existed as provinces of the First Eternal Imperium of Valdros. These western territories contained numerous settlements, farming communities, trade centers, military outposts, noble holdings, and frontier towns. While connected to the Imperium through law, trade, and governance the region remained geographically distant from the Imperial heartlands.
Over time, tensions developed between the western provinces and Imperial authorities.
The Conflict

During the final years of the war, a catastrophic magical event transformed a vast region between the two sides into what is now known as the Death Marsch. The war concluded with the western provinces successfully separating from the Imperium and establishing the independent kingdom now known as Westreach. The First Eternal Imperium retained its eastern territories while Westreach emerged as a sovereign nation governed independently from Imperial authority. Neither nation fully recovered unchanged from the conflict.
The War of Independence remains a defining event for both Westreach and the Imperium. Within Westreach it is often remembered as the struggle that secured the nation's freedom and self governance. Within the Imperium, it is frequently remembered as the loss of the western provinces and one of the greatest political and territorial crises in Imperial history. Though centuries have passed since the war's conclusion its consequences continue to shape the relationship between the two nations and the people who inhabit them.
