Milo Finch certainly did not. He arrived by morning train carrying one overfilled suitcase, a rolled bundle of sketches, and a carefully folded photograph of home tucked safely between the pages of a notebook already crowded with calculations. Born in a modest riverside settlement beyond the outer trade routes, Milo spent much of his childhood building gliders from scraps of wood, repairing broken clockwork toys, and sketching flying machines that most sensible adults insisted could never function. Milo disagreed. At seventeen years old, he earned admission to the W.A.S.A. Whiskerton Aeronautics Society Academy, where engineers, navigators, machinists, and inventors study the uncertain science of flight. He currently rents a small attic room in the Academic District — a place perpetually cluttered with engineering manuals, loose screws, unfinished sketches, and inventions that occasionally behave in alarming ways. His most treasured possession is a prototype flight pack manufactured by the Whiskerton Aeronautics Society, designated the WhiskerJet Mk.I Though considered outdated by many instructors, Milo maintains it carefully and remains convinced that the machine still holds untapped potential. Officially, modifications are discouraged. Unofficially, he has already made several. From the City Archives Milo Finch is a first-year student at the W.A.S.A. Whiskerton Aeronautics Society Academy and one of the youngest owners of a functioning WhiskerJet training pack currently registered within the city. Though still early in his studies, he has developed a reputation among classmates for unusual persistence, relentless curiosity, and a tendency to ask questions that professors often describe as “educationally inconvenient.” He is frequently seen carrying notebooks filled with sketches, mechanical diagrams, flight calculations, and ideas for modifications that have not yet received official approval. Few of these designs remain unchanged for more than a week. Fewer still remain entirely safe.
The WhiskerJet Mk.I Among Milo's possessions, none is more important than his WhiskerJet Mk.I training pack. Originally intended as an instructional flight platform for Academy students, the machine is now considered outdated compared to newer designs. Milo continues to maintain, repair, and quietly improve it anyway. Some instructors consider this dedication admirable. Others consider it a paperwork problem waiting to happen. Few have seen either. Fewer still know that on difficult evenings, Milo often rereads the letter beneath candlelight before returning to his workbench. Reputation Though known among classmates for impossible optimism, Milo has already developed a reputation among professors for asking dangerous questions. Most begin with: "Yes, but theoretically..." When lectures end, he is often seen wandering districts far beyond the Academy grounds — sketchbook in hand and pockets filled with loose screws — searching for forgotten inventions, unusual mechanisms, and stories hidden between the quieter corners of Whiskerton. Many believe he will one day become an accomplished engineer. Milo hopes for something slightly more unreasonable. To build a machine capable of taking him somewhere no mouse has ever gone before.
