A third school of warlords appeared in the Late Middle Ages as an evolution of scholar-warriors: warthinkers (known in western literature as the Machiavellians, and certainly inspired by this man's works), warlords whose personal fighting skill did not always go above the "mediocre" mark, but whose charisma, bravado, tactical cunning and strategic thought was unmatched. As their talents became recognised and valued, they took up key positions of power or outright wrested control of numerous statelets. Attempts to challenge these extraordinary men to a traditional duel of arms were met with hot lead, as though perhaps more physically frail, all warthinkers were elite marksmen by necessity. This is one of the ways in which gunpowder profoundly changed Ferozen society, as the definition of "the stronger challenger" changed, with many revolutions and coups in the following decades. The Revolutionary Wars' outbreak demanded highly trained officers and administrators, which other warlords logically fulfilled. However, most of this socio-military class was undoubtedly slaughtered during the conflict, and largely disappeared into obscurity with the advent of British control in the Early Colonial Age. Those who survived had to adapt to British laws and customs as civil servants and administrators, losing much of their military heritage in the process. This dreary situation changed with the Second Boer War, during which the need to materialise native Australian officers for the Federation's army became paramount, leading to the Ferozen Warlords in Contemporary Oceanyka.
