Balayang is Bunjil's brother, which this creator deity fashioned from remaining primordial matter. He is usually potrayed as a bat, an animal which hides from the light, and ventures out at night. Being jealous of all the great things that Bunjil created, he sought to submerge the world in darkness, so that no one could see creation. Balayang is believed to have invented jealousy, the source of many human evils, but also of ambition.
He is the patron of merchants, night-dwellers, Kurdaitcha assassins, bandits and pirates.
