Beatniks are part of an urban subculture which began experimenting with drugs, sexuality, art and travel. Their most distinguishing features are a love of jazz and the frequenting of coffeehouses, libraries and jazz clubs. Being very bohemian in nature, beatniks are preoccupied with things such as poetry, philosophy and music. Their daily dress is also unconventional, featuring black clothing, berets, sunglasses and goatees. These people would later heavily influence the hippies.
