Southwall Quarter

Southwall Quarter

Neighborhood

By far the most populous area, as well as the cheapest place to live within the city walls. In Southwall, there is no curfew, and the law is somewhat more lightly enforced. Largely, this quarter is given over to apartments and small businesses. A university, and a huge market and fairgrounds are its biggest attractions. During King's Week, the fairgrounds hold the largest riddling tournament in all the realm.

The Royal Illuminated University

9 - The Royal Scholastic University [50gp Per Semester] An ancient stone edifice that was once a castle. Before  The Reign of Eld, it was built in defiance of the mountain people. Conquered as many as twenty times (accounts differ), the castle has been rebuilt several times. Nine centuries ago the keep was inhabited by a secret society of illuminated seers who believed in a second, invisible solar deity much later revealed to be Speed, or some early premonition of His discovery. They were buried alive for their heresy, but were eventually exonerated and their vast library was incorporated into the college we see today. Now, the college mostly teaches reading and writing, and houses a publisher which produces books of interest to the general public as well as a semi-annual journal of academic treatises.

Ursula used to get cheap and plentiful venison from Ariadne Brae, who left early in 268 RP on an expedition.

Fairgrounds

The Fair Day Festival - The Golden Circus (Master of Ceremonies): Roosevelt Barbary, Esq.: [HGT: 5ft, 10in; WGT: 155 lbs] A blonde man in a silly costume with a big fancy beard. With his fine black cane, he commands diverse amusements and wonders for the fair. He has a tendency to get swept up in the spectacle of it all. He really needs this year's fair to go better than last year. He wants the riddling to be much more impressive so that he can attract more of the nobles who run their own riddling contests in Cloverview. DRESSED IN: black thigh boots, dark-red pants, and a formal shirt and coat. POSSESSIONS: cabbage, small metal box with 10sp.

The Golden Circus is built on top of several flat roofs of purpose-built interconnected structures designed to bear the immense weight of the week's celebrations. Roof cave-ins rarely ever happen. Hardly more than once a year, and aren't even fatal every time.

THE ARENA: The northernmost region is a multi-leveled arena with room for the Gryphon shows, historical battle reenactments, and judicial combat ordeals. All throughout King's Week, gryphons and demigryphs from Athoras Heights demonstrate their fine skills and gorgeous plumage. Knights trained in Deosil Quarter recreate famous battles with period-correct armor from centuries ago. Under the burning gaze of Karna at noon, the county's most brazen criminals fight for blood atonement in the dusty fire-lit arena.

THE HANGING GARDEN: The middle is transformed into a hanging garden with a great stage and many seats for riddling tournaments and performances. This is the centerpiece of Fair Days. A good riddling tournament is believed to predict success on the battlefield, or a temporary weakening of  The Curse of Sin. More importantly, each of the many hundreds of riddle contestants pay a  five gold crown entry fee, and to the winner goes the spoils (minus taxes). This usually amounts to about 2,000 gold crowns. Riddling is a somewhat serious pursuit, and any perceived misconduct at the tournament would be grounds for a structured duel to the death.

THE PROMENADES: The sides are promenades for late-night dancing, with food stalls and colorful lanterns. One side is free entry, and the other is quite nice. To be young and on the hunt for romance is to spend as many nights as possible in the best promenade, and as many nights as necessary in the free one.

Entry to the east promenade is 20 silver dollars; within, there are private and group instructors, matchmakers, dance commanders, and plenty of liquid courage on offer. There, the well-bred mingle with the merely well-heeled.

Entry is free to the west promenade. The dancing is livelier, the music is faster, and the fights are more sudden. Drinks here cost more (for what you get), but are also consumed in greater quantity. Less champagne, more scrumpy.

THE BONFIRE TOWER: The southern region is ground level, with grand staircases leading up to the Hanging Gardens. Throughout the year, a team of carpenters carefully build a bonfire tower as high as possible in worship to the gods, and at the end of King's Week, a single hero climbs it to light it from the top. It must burn from the top, or far too many onlookers would die. As it is, some usually do. The torchbearer is elected by the ringmaster. Candidates pay 100 gold crowns for the privilege of being selected, and must make their case to the crowds from the Garden Stage all throughout King's Week. The torchbearing hero then takes the pot of gold upon successful completion. If they die, the gold goes to their family.
