True Names

Humans learn their true names the first time they use magic or have it used on them. A person's true name is a word or short combination of words that fits their personality on a spiritual level.  They are the only person in the world with this True Name. 

For a human, speaking a True Name has the following effect:

  • Entice. Speak their true name and then ask/tell them to do something.  If they do it, they get 2xp. They also get +2 to all rolls made to accomplish what you've asked of them. 
  • Harm. Speak their true name as you injure them. You do +1 damage.
  • Discourage. Speak their true name and then make a roll against them.  Your roll is at +2. 
  • Hinder. Speak their true name, and if none of the above happen, their next roll against you is at -2. 

Angels, demons, genies, fae, and spirits all have unique true names that they know intrinsically; this is different from the name given to them by their creators/parents. Speaking their true name such that they can hear it affects them as above, except Discourage and Hinder are at +4. 

Anyone that is not human, angel, demon, genie, fae, or spirit is affected by Discourage and Hinder at +3. This is all accounted for in their racial templates.  

Your True Name can only be used against you once per scene, unless you would like to choose to allow further uses.

Basic True Name Features

Every racial template comes with one of these.

Compelled by True Name (human)

The Hinder and Discourage effects of your True Name are at +2. The severity of your True Name is determined by your race, this feature can only be purchased as part of a racial template. Only humans have this level of compulsion.

Compelled by True Name (moderate)

The Hinder and Discourage effects of your True Name are at +3. The severity of your True Name is determined by your race, this feature can only be purchased as part of a racial template.  Non-humans who do not have the severe compulsion have the moderate compulsion. 

XP cost: -1
Keywords: Social, Inhuman, Bad

Compelled by True Name (severe)

The Hinder and Discourage effects of your True Name are at +4. The severity of your True Name is determined by your race, this feature can only be purchased as part of a racial template. Angels, demons, fae, and spirits have the severe compulsion. 

XP cost: -2

Additional True Name Features

Most racial templates do not come with any of these, but anyone can select them if they choose to. 

Stronger Buff from your True Name

When someone uses your True Name to Discourage you, they get an additional +1 to their roll. 

XP cost: -1

Stronger Compulsion from True Name

When someone uses your True Name to Entice you, you must make a Resist Influence roll. If you succeed, it's your choice whether to do what they said. If you fail, you must do what they said. In either case, you get the XP if you do it.

XP cost: -3

Stronger Debuff from your True Name

When someone uses your True Name to Hinder you, you take an additional -1 to your roll.
