How much you know about the Fae depends on your Savoire Fae skill.  The sections below give you the information that your character should know based on their skill level. You can also roll to see if you might know things even if they aren't on your list, but not until it becomes relevant.  Storycrafters have a table against which to compare your success margins for this, so please drop us a ping.  Fae characters that were raised among the Fae are assumed to know fae lore as if they had a skill level of 15, and can roll for the 17+ items.  Fae characters that were raised amongst humans have no similar bonus.

Savoire Fae 10+

  • In Sylvan, you can't lie because it uses true names for things. Someone who knows a little about magic would already know this.
  • Faeries can turn invisible with Feth Fiada.
  • People that have faerie blood in them are called halflings. Many of them possess an inherent ability to speak Sylvan.
  • Faeries can't learn magic except for Glamour.
  • If you see pointed ears on someone from the corner of your eye, it means they have faerie blood.
  • Contact with cold iron dispels Glamour.
  • Faeries are vulnerable to cold iron weapons.  Touching it causes them stinging pain but no damage, and weakens them physically.
  • In the forest, they like to rest in Alder trees, or dance beneath them.
  • Some fae are suckers for attractive mortals.
  • There is some particular procedure for taking something from an elder tree, and if you get it wrong, the whole forest will be offended.  You're not exactly sure what to do, though.
  • Speaking an untruth to a fae, or not doing something that you said you were going to do offends them.
  • Breaking a promise or a deal can get you killed.
  • They don't like to be called Faeries.  Try "The Fair Folk" instead... most of them will accept that?
  • They have a thing about borrowing versus stealing, but you're not sure what that's all about.
  • Any food or drink offered to you by the fae tastes amazing, the most delicious version of that particular food or drink you can imagine. There must be something magical about it. Remember, you can roll to see if you know more about fae food.

Savoire Fae 11+

  • Faeries are allergic to red berries.
  • Faeries can't learn magic except for Glamour.
  • Second Sight helps you see through fae disguises, and renders Feth Fiada useless against you.  Some people are born with Second Sight, and there might be other ways to get it.
  • Cold Iron sucks.  It dispels Glamour effects and hurts extra. Even just touching it causes stinging pain (but no damage).
  • Apples are delicious and lilacs smell amazing.  Both of these things are also true for extremely attractive mortals.
  • Burning elderwood, destroying and elder tree, or taking too much from one tree, or taking anything from the tree without seeking permission first. To ask permission, you can first try to speak to the residing eldernymph, but you probably won't get an answer.  If you don't, place an offering of food at the base of the tree.  If the food rots, do not take from the tree.  If the food is eaten and there is a gift in its place, then you may take from the tree.
  • Speaking untruths is incredibly offensive, and impossible in Sylvan.  The Honest Folk invented speech, but it was the humans and the demons who invented lies.
  • Breaking a promise, deal, or contract is punishable by exile for the Sidhe, and by death for mortals.
  • Whatever you do, don't eat food offered to you by the fae.

Savoire Fae 13+

  • If you rub your hands together while holding some Thyme sprigs, you'll have Second Sight for one hour.
  • All animals have Second Sight, including people who can take animal forms, but only when they are in that form.
  • If you wear a daisy chain around your neck, or carry a staff made of rowanwood, you can't enter faerie circles, so you can't be taken away.
  • Don't call them Faeries, call them the Sidhe, the fair folk, or Themselves.  If you want to sound extra respectful, refer to them as the Honest Folk or the Good Neighbors. You can also say Theniflyem ("The Honestfolk") to refer to a group of people, or Thir Thenifly to refer to an individual. A mortal should address an Eldernymph as Wise One or Thir Esem.
  • Not doing something you said you were going to is extremely offensive, enough to completely destroy a relationship.  Jokingly saying you're going to do something is offensive, but if you twist the words right, you can avoid this.  "What if I were to..." can be used in a joking manner, but "I'm going to..." would be offensive.
  • Stealing is not okay.  Borrowing is okay, but you must return it in better condition.  If someone borrows something from you, returns it in better condition, and its absence didn't cause you inconvenience, then it's inappropriate to be annoyed about it.
  • You are familiar with the Code of the Honest Ones.
  • Sometimes it's okay to eat food given to you by the fae... It's got something to do with where they got it or how they made it?

Savoire Fae 15+

  • You know exactly how Feth Fiada works.
  • They know if you break your promise to them.
  • Tear the leaf off of a four-leaf clover, and you will have Second Sight for one hour.
  • While look through a Hagstone, which is a stone with a naturally-eroded hole in it, you have Second Sight.
  • If you are smashed beyond function on Elderberry wine, then you have Second Sight.
  • You are familiar with either the Code of the Seelie or Code of the Unseelie, choose one.
  • When mortals eat food given to them by the fae, it places a magical compulsion on them to make them very loyal for a day, and eager to eat more! If you are a fae who has had a mortal under the effect before, then you understand exactly how fae food works. Otherwise, you might not know all of the details.

Savoire Fae 17+

  • If you turn your coat inside-out, glamours on you are removed.
  • If you are carrying a four-leaf clover, the next Glamour used on you will be blocked, and one leaf will fall off the clover.
  • Rowanberry wine. If you drink it and pass out drunk, you'll wake up with all glamours removed.  If you are smashed beyond function on only rowanberry wine, you can't be glamoured.
  • Burning St John's Wort prevents glamour in an area around the fire.
  • When Oak, Ash, and Hawthorne grow close together, you have Second Sight when standing in the area between them.
  • You are familiar with both the Code of the Seelie and the Code of the Unseelie.
  • You understand exactly how fae food works.

Faerie Abilities

A Promise is a Promise

Whenever someone makes a promise to you (including if it's a deal), they gain 1xp. Whenever someone breaks their word to you, you immediately know. You gain 1xp, Leverage on them, and take +2 to your next roll to get vengeance.

Feth Fiada

This feature is only for those with fae blood. You can become invisible at will, but with some limitations. You must stand very still and close your eyes for three seconds to activate this ability. You are always visible to faeries and those with Second Sight. If you are in someone's line of sight when you activate this ability to become invisible, they can still see you. This ability functions as Glamour for the purposes of being dispelled. There are other ways to see through it.

Second Sight

You can see actively through Seeming and passively through Feth Fiada.

Seeming

This feature is only for those with fae blood. You have another form that you can take at will. It takes a few seconds to complete the transformation, and it's interrupted if you're struck. With GM approval, this may have an impact on your Numbers. Those with Second Sight can roll to see if they notice you have a Seeming and get a glimpse of your true form. This ability counts as Glamour for the purpose of being dispelled. Flavor Requirement: You must provide a description of your other form and any limitations it has. If you would like more fluid control over your form, consider Magical Aptitiude.

Fae Food

Any food or drink offered to you by the fae tastes amazing, the most delicious version of that particular food or drink you can imagine.  Food has to be grown within faerie glades, and eaten by a mortal either in the home of a faerie (or faerie glade), to have any affect. Regardless, food conjured or enhanced by a pureblood fae using Faerie Food magic always counts.

When a mortal willingly eats such food (ie, they are not force-fed), they must make a Will roll opposed by the Will of the faerie who invited them in (even if another fae offers the food).  However, if the faerie conjures it with Faerie Food magic, then it's Faerie Food vs. Resist Influence instead.  If the mortal knew that they were entering the home of a faerie / faerie glade, they take -1 to their roll.  If the faerie who brought them in is one who offered them the food, the faerie takes +1 to their roll.  The mortal's player can also choose to allow the effect (whether it's because the player wants them to fall into the trap, or whether the character is actually willing), in which case no roll is necessary.

If the faerie's roll meets or exceeds the mortal's, the mortal gets the status Loyal to (name) for 24 hours.  That means:

  • A -3 for further Will rolls if they eat more qualifying food.
  • The mortal follows any direct order the fae gives, unless they make a successful Resist Influence roll.  The command is up to to the interpretation of the mortal.  Phrasing is important.  "Could you hand me the salt?" is not an order, but "Hand me the salt" is!
  • The mortal generally acts in the best interest of this particular fae as they understand it.
  • This is a Glamour effect for the purpose of being dispelled.
  • The effect ends immediately if the fae attacks the mortal or threatens them with a deadly weapon, or if someone else does so on their behalf. Unfriendly magic counts as a deadly weapon.
  • If the mortal is ordered to do something very hazardous or against their normal code of behavior (GM's decision), he gets a Resist Influence roll to end the effect entirely.

The Seelie Court

Other

The Seelie Code

  • Death before dishonor.  Chivalry still lives.  Honor is the most important virtue, the source of all glory.  Personal honor must always be kept stainless.  Sometimes death is the only path which can erase a mark of dishonor.
  • Love conquers all.  Love lies at the heart of the Dreaming.  True love transcends all and epitomizes what it means to be a Seelie.  Courtly love best expresses love in its highest form, although familial love and love of companions also serve as pure embodiments of that exalted virtue.  Anything is permitted in the name of true love.
  • Beauty is life.  Beauty is a timeless, objective quality that, while it cannot be defined, is always recognized for itself.  Beauty is the muse of creation, the ultimate flowering of the Dreaming.  Once found, it must be protected, for it is both eternal and fragile.  To die in the service of beauty is an honor and a privilege.
  • Never forget a debt. One gift deserves another.  The recipient of a gift is obligated to return the favor.  Likewise, a curse should be returned in kind.  An oath of friendship should be answered with a corresponding oath.  Never refuse to aid anyone to whom you are indebted.  Never forget a kindness... or a curse.

The Unseelie Court

Other

The Unseelie Code

  • Change is good.  Security does not exist.  The slightest of circumstances can transform a king into a peasant.  Nothing is certain in a world where change is the only constant.  Embrace change or else fall before its onslaught.  Chaos and discord rule the universe.  Adapt or die.
  • Glamour is free.  Glamour is worthless unless used.  Hoarding Glamour makes no sense, since it is replenishable.  So long as humans exist, there will always be dreamers, hence, there will always be more Glamour.  Acquire it by any means possible, and you will never be without a constant supply.
  • Honor is a lie.  Honor has no place in this world.  It is a fairy tale constructed to cover the essential emptiness behind most traditions.  Only through enlightened self-interest can any truth be attained.
  • Passion before duty.  Passion is the truest state of the fae spirit.  Follow your instincts and act on your impulses.  Live life to the fullest without regard to the consequences - they will come about regardless of what you do.  Death can come at any time, so live without regret.
The Unseelie Court is divided into two other courts: The Fall Court and the Autumn Court.
