Castle Ravenloft (named for Queen Ravenovia Van Roeyen) is an ancient fortress built atop a 1000 foot high pillar of stone. The current fortification was constructed from and atop the ruins of a far older fortress nearly 5 centuries ago. The current structure was designed by famed artificer and architect Unknown, with the help of the Wizard Exethantur, and his apprentice Khazan. Shortly after it was completed, the Mists covered Barovia, and the castle was cut off from the rest of the world. The Zarovich family, specifically Strahd, has ruled since then from Castle Ravenloft.
