Expedition 52c - Mandras' Account

January 25, 2024

The party tried to break through the southern door, to no avail. The vile cultists had well and truly sealed it.

With a little effort, the party managed to re-open the East door and pass back into the spinning corridors. They selected one at random and found themselves heading NW. They soon came upon a large room inhabited by a bad-tempered lizard of considerable size. It charged and died quickly under Mandras and Konrad’s blows, but not before wounding Mandras. Glancing down at the dead creature, Mandras noted a half-digested arm in its eviscerated stomach. Meanwhile other party members found a dead thief behind a plinth in the room, but nothing of greater consequence.

Retracing their steps, they found a hidden door leading N. The large room contained a sizable basket in the centre. Approaching it gingerly, the party was unsurprised when a pair of 5-foot-long vipers came hissing forth. They too were quickly sliced and diced and the basket turned out to contain thousands of silver pieces and 5 gems. This was dutifully collected.

Venturing further into the next rooms and corridors, the party found another secret passage heading N. It gave on to an even larger room, made of more refined materials, with columns butting out from the walls and beach scenes painted in between the columns around the entire circumference. It appeared empty but for the exit, a door to the N. Mandras and Alf tried to open it, only to be met by a slight sinking of the floor and a flood of water inundating the room. After another unsuccessful attempt, the water was getting close to Mandras’ armpits. Konrad and Rarder waded up and managed to force the door – with a dull click, the water also started to drain away.

Having concluded that the revolving corridors must have a limited number of spiraling angles to proceed along, the party concluded that some of the tunnels must meet up and wind back. It certainly seemed to be the case as they proceeded in a SE direction.

They came to a room with a smashed altar, akin to the one that had contained the cultists. There was graffiti on it, the name of the mage we were hunting. Further inspection led to a loud click. Everyone expected the worst, but it turned out to be a hidden slide leading down a floor.

After a safe glide down the tube, the party emerged in a room decorated with frescos of past monarchs being entertained by a dwarven jester. Hmmm, never heard of a dwarven jester before harrumphed Mandras. A coffin lay in the room and Alf pried it open a little recklessly – only to have a bad scare as a dwarven jester head popped out on a spring and swung wildly from side to side.

Exiting the room by a N door and following a series of corridors, the party entered a huge 70x70 room. Against the N wall stood a mummy in armor, with 9 Skelton guards. The skeletons promptly advanced and most were dispelled with a wave of Konrad’s hand. Mandras and Alf each killed the two remaining bone collections. The mummy still had not moved – Alf decapitated it and sadly found nothing worth collecting from it.

Exiting into the corridor S and then E, a howling started from behind.  Six leathery, red eyes humanoids rushed at the adventurers and were hacked down in a trice.

Passing a few more doors, some peeped into and others left alone, the party encountered a S facing door. In the 30x30 room was a sarcophagus flanked by 4 pillars surmounted by dancing flames. Nothing came out to attack the party, so the tomb was inspected, within one of the pillars, Konrad discovered a map – no less than a treasure map? Anyways, there was an X and it marked the spot…
