Kalsguard (formerly Zweibeldorf) is located in an a temperate area with some low rolling hills and relatively sparse vegetation; the settlement forme and grew around a stream and a well-travelled junction between Bumbleton, Ursagorod and Vargenthorp. They primarily harvest onions, enough to support a reasonable export; there is also a nearby region to the northwest that is rich with clay and granite deposits.
The nearest landmark is a collection of huge bones to the southeast of town, the largest of them appear to form a ribcage large enough for a horse to fit inside with ease. It is commonly accepted that these are the bones of a dragon and possibly it’s attackers.
Economy
It is not a large settlement but trade is typically above average due to its location and, although not wealthy, the people of Kalsguard generally live a modest lifestyle as a result. Some taxes are applied to certain goods sold and services rendered in the city, in line with normal taxation through the Realm - a new “Deacon’s Tax” has recently been established which has caused some upset in town but many individuals are now providing support to the local militia as a way of getting exemption from this tax.
Welfare
For the most part the people of Kalsguard are left to their own fate without much direct support from the crown; however, the relatively small size of the settlement means that people will generally do the best to help each other out. The local chapel collects donations which are often used to help people in more extreme circumstances. Nicholas Unton, a retired scholar from Bumbleton, has taken to providing basic lessons and education to some of the children in town.
Law and Order
The guard presence in Kalsguard has historically been relatively small with just a handful of permanent guards known as the Blue Hand seeing to law enforcement and reporting to Maela Holmes. Punishment typically includes fines and incarceration (including occasional use of stocks in the town square) - execution is an option in the most extreme cases but has not been a necessity for several decades.
Religion
A Church dedicated to Zolfon, God of Fire and Judgement, is currently being constructed but it will be another year or two before it is completed. The people of Kalsguard are a pious and god fearing lot though they don’t generally favour any one deity more than the others; most of them visit the small chapel in town at least once a week and some of the more wealthy people in town even have small altars or shrines in their homes. The local Deacon is well known about town and on a first name basis with almost all of the residents.
