The Rotundra

Location

A fear spell is set on the entrance, WIS DC 18 to pass

A grand marble staircase leads to a pair of large doors that open directly into the Wing

Above the doors is an engraved inscription in Old Annish that reads

"Gaze here, Visitor, with wonder, on Annwyn That Was, and is Now Lost"

This high, domed room is massive in it's construction, a hundred feet across and fifty feet high. You can see galleries from the second floor encircling it, before it narrows to a sparkling ceiling. Jewel-work and faded paint form the eight-pointed star of the Annwyn Empire at it's apex. The walls and columns are adorned with elegant stonework and inscriptions that highlight the story of the Annwyn people. The open design and monumental scale give the Rotunda a timeless, majestic quality.

At the heart of the Rotunda stands an enormous taxidermied elephant, 15 feet tall, with enormous tusks.

Three wide shadowed galleries radiate from the spoke of the Rotunda, one to the east, one to the west, and one to the north, across from the entrance.

Two internal staircases, to the NW and NE, on the far side of the Rotunda lead up to the second level.

Immediately behind the entry stairs, barely visible in a shadowed nook, are two tall alcoves, one on each side. Two 10 foot tall statues rest in these alcoves, made of marble and depicting an armored figure with a large two handed sword.

The Elephant and the Sphinx

The taxidermied elephant is an illusion cloaking an ancient Androsphinx named Asclepius. Asclepius is incredibly old. While her parents and her race are native to Great Mbo, her parents were envoys on behalf of the God-King to the Annwyn Empire. She was born in the Annwyn home islands. She was one of the few creatures that survived the collapse and the events leading up to The Recall.

After wandering for many years, she secretly helped found Haven University and then took up residence there, as a lecturer on Annwyn studies. She always wore the form of a human when interacting with the people of Haven Towne, never revealing her true nature. For a time she was active in human society, advising Marcus Madrigal's son and grandson. She was a respected member of the University and instrumental in having the Unknown built as a means to keep alive the memory of her long-lost homeland.

However, after a century or so she became disillusioned with the wizards of University. In a quest for seclusion she gradually wove an illusion of decay and abandonment around the Wing and also set fear spells around the perimeter to keep the wizards away.  Legends grew up about the wing being haunted. Eventually it was abandoned by the University.

When Black Alice began her explorations, she quickly penetrated Asclepius' disguises and managed to befriend the Sphinx. It was Asclepius who was finally able to answer Black Alice' questions on the nature of the multiverse and educated her somewhat on the doom slowly befalling the world.

Asclepius has been alone now for two hundred years now, though and grows lonely. She has much knowledge of the nature of reality and also Black Alice's intentions. However, being a Sphinx she only speaks in riddles.

Asclepius Powers

Asclepius is an extremely old and powerful Sphinx and is considerably more powerful than average.

The First Riddle

"Empire born of tube and shard
Spells they sung, their isle to guard.
Dominion over sea and sky,
Yet hubris called, and doom drew nigh.

Far-called, their navies melt away;
On dune and headland sinks the fire:
Lo, all their pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!

Sunken spires, whisper deep,
Darkest secrets, that oceans keep.

What am I?

Second Riddle

"From ash and ruin, she took her flight,
Leaving behind a world in night.
She sought new shores where life could bloom,
A verdant isle, away from doom.

Through storms she came, by fate's demand,
To claim a land of palm and sand.
she built anew where warmth embraced,
A school born of trials faced.

Books and memories did she build
A temple grand, all golden gild
Long she watched, and long she taught,
To seekers bold, her riddles brought.

Scrolls and tomes, a trove so vast,
She shared her lore—years did pass.

But greed, neglect, and foolish pride,
In mortal hearts, she could not abide.
So doors she closed, and silence grew,
Now feet fear tread where knowledge flew

Who am I?

Third Riddle

In shadowed guise, she crossed the land,
A seeker bold with beer in hand.
Her guise was black, her magic dire,
Within her burned a hidden fire.

Beneath the waves, where ruins lie,
A tale of power and hubris high.
To know its fall, my tests she faced,
Through trials harsh, her will embraced

Through riddles sharp and questions steep,
She sought the truths that I did keep.
With every answer, knowledge accrue,
Between the two a friendship grew.

Enlightened, she rose, her questions stilled,
Her purpose renewed, her spirit filled.
Over the waves, she carried lore,
To fate unknown on western shore.

Who is she, this wanderer keen,
Who sought my lore and left serene?

Answer Riddle

In days of old, with spells of night,
The wise grew bold, their hubris bright.
They tore the threads, they sang the songs,
Their doom did come, a creeping wrong.

In darkness deep, the boundary fades,
A fragile line in Shadow's shades.
Once firm it stood, now worn and thin,
Where life meets death, the end begins.

The silent stir, the restless wake,
Dead fleets sail, their pride to slake,
A hole in the world, a chilling breath,
Living lands merged with death.

Sisters of power, once stood tall,
To halt the darkness, they answered the call.

One sang of fire, burning bright,
One whispered to stars in the quiet of night,
The last shaped sunlight, under her thrall,
Together, they built a shadow wall.

Their spells did hold, the darkness penned,
But time frayed bonds; their power bends.
Their victory waned, over years,
Death is coming, darkness and fear.

Sister bond broken, sibling trust done,
No more united, their chorus unsung,
They fear the dark, fear each other more,
Only one remains, to bar the door.

Through desert lands, and ziggurats tall,
My dark friend walks, to save us all,
West she journeys, where great rivers rise,
To the God-King's throne, under watchful skies.

Her purpose salvation, her secrets deep,
A world to save, a promise to keep,
The God-King waits, his power vast,
Against her courage, his deathless grasp.

Her path is peril, her fate unclear,
Yet onward she journeys, defying fear.
Alone and friendless, her path is stark,
Will you aid her, against the dark?
