Elf

quote

Aliens from Another World

Elves come from the land of Fairy (also known as the Feywild). While mankind was still learning to handle rudimentary tools, Elves had already spent untold centuries in vast kingdoms within the Feywild. This may explain how fast their empires grew in the mortal world. To this day, many ancient and long gone Elven societies leave their mark in many mortal governments, traditions, and practices.

The Golden Age of Elvenkind

Thousands of years ago, when the Dragon-Gods first gifted mortals with magic, Elves had already created their own arcane arts long before that in their Feyworld kingdoms. This proved a great advantage for the old Elven empires, allowing them to quickly spread across the continents to create the largest empires ever seen on Aeries to date.

At some point in this Golden Age, scholars uncovered a prophecy foretelling the end of the Age with demons rising from great cracks in the ground. Though Elves of the old kingdoms surely scoffed at such farcical tales, many Elves now point to the Rage of Demons as the beginning of a dark age for Elven societies.

The Age of Demons

During the Rage of Demons, Elves played a peculiar role on both sides of the conflict. During the Rage, some deities of the Feyworld Court revealed themselves to be Demon Lords in disguise. This made many of their Elven worshipers convert to other practices and beliefs, but the ones that stayed loyal to the Demon Lords were often seen in positions of power in the various demonic armies.

Strangers In A Familiar Land

Heaven on Earth

A secret island acts as a heaven-on-earth for any and all Elves who wish to return to the Fey realms. It’s even believed that when an Elf dies their soul returns to Fey, where they spend a random amount of time before they can choose to return to Aeries.

Natures

Elves are categorized by Natures, environmental and physical aspects of the world that the first Elves were made to mimic. Snow Elves, for example, were first shaped by the unforgiving cold of deadly winters. It is from this Nature that they inherited their icy cold demeanor, icicle-thin narrow bodies, and pale blue, corpse-like skin.

  • High Elf (or "Sun Elf") - From the southern desert empire of Ah'kilor. One of the earliest practitioners of magic both holy and arcane. Their empires used to span across all the seas, and many of their ruins can still be found dotting the landscapes of Aeries.
  • Wood Elf - Nestled in the deepwoods of the Angshire Kingdom. Sworn protectors of the wilderness that lies in Angshire. They have little care for the trappings of modern civilization, and have a close affinity with nature and the beasts that live within it.
  • Eladrin - Elves from the lands of Fairy, where kingdoms are split into different times of day and seasons. Their bodies - and moods - change with the seasons. It is rare to find one outside of their mortal realm home of Nelderenvane.
  • Dusk Elf - Refugees of a long-ago war in Fairy that, due to the timeless nature of the land, is still being fought today. Forced to bear the curse of an angered Elven god, Dusk Elves feel no connection to their Fairy home world, nor gain the benefits of its direct influence. This has made them essentially mortal (though long lived) Elves.
  • Dark Elf - Known as the terror of the Underlands, these subterranean Elves are known for their cruelty, demon worship, and midnight raiding parties that make them the boogeyman of many surface dwellers. Since the end of the Rage of Demons, a few once-secret societies of benevolent Dark Elves have been making their presence known to the world.
  • Moon Elf - Snow Elves that have abandoned their Ice Prince to side with mortals.
  • Snow Elf - Ruled by the Ice Prince in the land of Fairy, Snow Elves are known for their war against mortals that ended in a shaky victory for mortals and a permanent separation between the mortal world and Fairy.

If you're playing an Elf,

You might...

  • Be cautious in building relationships with shorter lifespan species, staying at a distance or resigning yourself to outliving them.
  • Have a handful of obscure or highly specialized skills mastered through several decades.
  • Weigh actions on a grander scale of time, considering how a good or evil act could affect the world decades from now.

Others probably...

  • Assume you're a master archer, spell-slinger, swordsman, and demon summoner.
  • Believe you are condescending or looking down on them.
  • Focus on your looks, finding you incredibly graceful or extremely fragile.

Overview

As an ancient people, elves have seen many of the greatest changes in the world. From the exile of the Giants that made way for current day species, to the Rage of Demons that disrupted the whole world, High Elves have been there to witness, record, and learn. Their empires were once so massive and great that their golden age lasted centuries before the Rage destroyed much of their lands and records, throwing them into a dark age of history.

As a High Elf, think of how you may feel about the decline of the prime High Elf civilization. Do you welcome the change, or perhaps feel melancholy over it? Do you long for the day where you will be invited to the secret Elven islands? Maybe the ones that have already left look more like deserters instead?

Physical Description

High Elf skin tone ranges from light to dark browns, and their hair is naturally shades of green and brown. Elves of the Ahkilor Dominion often wear many gold accessories such as bracelets, hair clips, rings, and earrings.

Society

High Elf society is rich, artful, and on the precipice of disaster. Though they once ruled most of Aeries, their current empires are nothing more than shadows of the Golden Age kingdoms that stretched from sea to sea.

Wood Elf

Overview

Tied with Dusk Elves as the smallest species (in population), Wood Elves like to stay in the deepest parts of the wilderness of Angshire. One of the first inhabitants of the land now known as Angshire, Wood Elves shared the fertile grasslands and woodlands with their Halfling neighbors with little problem. When Humans came ashore fleeing from Dolmenwood and Chult, the Elves were not as welcoming as Halflings. Fearing the new species, the Wood Elves fled deeper into the woods and hid away from Mankind's civilizations. The Dolish Humans, still fresh from the scars of their war against the Snow Elves of the land of Fairy, saw these Elves as a threat.

Hundreds of years later, the feud between Kith and Fey runs deep and affects all Wood Elves. Most live in secluded communities deep in the wilds of Angshire, some forming the bulk of the Straedé - a coalition of Fey that attack Kith caravans and routes. The Wood Elves that live within Kith society are often the victim of harsh prejudice and xenophobia, but there a growing movement of Morninglord worshipers seek to make Wood Elves equal in the eyes of the public.

You might...

  • Take pride in your work, for it honors your ancestors and gives you a place by their side.
  • Prefer the chaos of the wilderness over the chaos of cities.
  • Perform strange rituals in certain times of the day that only make sense to other Wood Elves.

Society

Wood Elf society is heavily inspired by ancient Orc civilizations that valued harmony, nature, and loyalty. Some scholars think that there may be lost records showing interactions between these ancient Orcs and the Elves that eventually became Wood Elves.

Eladrin

campaigns%2F90980%2Fb7052b4a-8c4f-4a03-8501-815c6950f124.png?webpfallback

Overview

Eladrin are children of the Nelderenvane region, a peaceful and beautiful land protected by rolling forests of treant guardians. They are known for their flamboyant personalities, welcoming societies, and close connections to the fey world.

As an Eladrin, consider what your character would look like in the four seasons. How often do they change seasons? Do they go by different names for each of them, or are they all aspects of one identity?

Physical Description

The average Eladrin ranges anywhere from 5'6" - 6'6" and usually have narrow, toned physiques like their other Elven cousins. Their bodies change according to the season that they most strongly connect to in the moment. Some Eladrin can stay in the same season for years, even decades, while others change as often as every other day. Each season often has a unique body that reflects the complexities of their personalities. It is not uncommon for an Eladrin to have feminine, masculine, and androgynous features depending on their season.

Society

Eladrin society is welcoming to any and all, especially those that are considered outsiders or "others" in different states. This coupled with their natural ability to change their shape has led to Eladrin being some of the most open-minded people on Aeries.
