Abilities

Glamour
Faerie magic.  It's generally impermanent and illusory. It cannot be used to heal.  Most pureblood fae can do at least a little bit of magic.  This can be just about any kind of magic, and it's unique to the individual.

  • Burning St John's Wort prevents glamour in an area around the fire.
  • If you are carrying a four-leaf clover, the next Glamour used on you will be blocked, and one leaf will fall off the clover.
  • If you turn your coat inside-out, glamours on you are removed.
  • Rowanberry wine. If you drink it and pass out drunk, you'll wake up with all glamours removed.  If you are smashed beyond function on only rowanberry wine, you can't be glamoured.
  • Contact with cold iron dispels Glamour.

Feth Fiada
You can turn invisible by standing still and quiet for a few seconds. Anyone looking right at you while you do this continues to be able to see you.  If you act aggressively, the effect generally ends. All pureblood fae can do this, and halflings generally cannot.

Second Sight
You can see passively through Feth Fiada. Additionally, If you blatantly squint and strain your eyes and concentrate at someone, you can also see through Seeming, getting a glimpse of their true form.  All fae and most halflings have this. Successfully doing so does not end their shapechange or otherwise have any effect on them, you just get a glimmering glimpse of their true form.

  • All animals have Second Sight, including people who can take animal forms, but only when they are in that form.
  • If you are smashed beyond function on Elderberry wine, then you have Second Sight.
  • If you rub your hands together while holding some Thyme sprigs, you'll have Second Sight for one hour.
  • Tear the leaf off of a four-leaf clover, and you will have Second Sight for one hour.
  • When Oak, Ash, and Hawthorne grow close together, you have Second Sight when standing in the area between them.
  • While look through a Hagstone, which is a stone with a naturally-eroded hole in it, you have Second Sight.

Wordbinder
Whenever someone makes a promise to you (including if it's a deal), they feel empowered to carry it out.  Whenever someone breaks their word to you, you immediately know. You feel empowered to make it right. All fae have this, and halflings rarely have it.

Seeming
Some fae can assume a human form.  This is a shapechange and is not illusory, however, those with Second Sight might be able to notice that they are under the effect.

Fae Food

What exactly counts as Fae Food differs between individual fae, but anything you eat within their glades always counts.  It always tastes amazing, the most delicious version of that particular food or drink you can imagine.

When a mortal willingly eats such food (ie, they are not force-fed), may shake the effects if their will is strong.  However, if the faerie conjures it with Glamour, it's harder to resist.  If the mortal knew that they were entering the home of a faerie / faerie glade, that also makes it harder to resist.  If the faerie who brought them in is one who offered them the food, that also makes it harder to resist.  If they fail to resist the effect, they become Neldet Dommet (Sylvan: truly devoted) until two sunrises/sunsets pass, which means:

  • It's nearly impossible to resist the effect again if they eat more before the effect is over, adding two more sunrises/sunsets to the duration.
  • The mortal follows any direct order the fae gives, unless they resist with strong will. The command is up to to the interpretation of the mortal.  Phrasing is important.  "Could you hand me the salt?" is not an order, but "Hand me the salt" is!
  • The mortal generally acts in the best interest of this particular fae as they understand it.
  • This is a Glamour effect for the purpose of being dispelled.
  • The effect ends immediately if the fae attacks the mortal or threatens them with a deadly weapon, or if someone else does so on their behalf. Any unfriendly magic counts as a deadly weapon.
  • If the mortal is ordered to do something very hazardous or against their normal code of behavior, then it is easier to resist the command.

Types of Fae

Genetics are willy nilly, the fae just generally become what they are alongside who they are.  Some fae look almost human, while some would sooner be called creatures. Not all specific types of fae have specific names.  Two fae of any two types can have a child become pretty much any type, with the exception of certain bloodlines (Nymphs generally breed true, and certain "pure" bloodlines of Daoine Sidhe pass on resemblances).

Daoine SidheThis is the ruling class of the fae. A fae is considered nobility if and only if they have Doaine blood. They can look like anything, but often have antlers or horns and pointed ears. They tend to resemble their parents.
Cait SidheThought to be witches with the power to turn into a cat and a desire to steal the souls of the dead before it was claimed by the gods, the Cait Sidhe is a fae with a human form and a cat form. It is believed that on Samhain, a Cait Sidhe will bless any house that leaves a saucer of milk out for it to drink, and those houses that did not let out a saucer of milk would be cursed into having all of their cows' milk dry. In human form, they are small and lithe, almost small enough to be considered a little person. A Cait Sidhe wanting to defend herself would likely gravitate more toward magic than swords. The type of cat they turn into is called a Shadowcat, which is a species of wild cat in the genus Puma.

NymphOf all types of fae, Nymphs have the strongest connection to nature. They are often bound to a certain geographical feature in some way. Nymphs that wander away from whatever they are bound to lose their power, and are at their best when they are at/in/near it. Children of Nymphs are almost always nymphs, and nymphs almost always have a nymph ancestor somewhere in their lineage.
EldernymphEldernymphs must always stay within 100 yards of an elder tree, but they can close their eyes and stay still for three seconds in order to instantly travel from one elder tree to another within a mile. Eldernymphs are the wise women, healers, and leaders of faerie communities in the forests. The used to be nymphs, and they likely have many daughters. Should something happen to her or her home tree, one of her daughters will take her place. Elder trees are sacred to the fae. Burning elderwood, destroying an elder tree, or taking too much from one tree, or taking anything from the tree without seeking permission first are all punishable offenses. To ask permission, you can first try to speak to the residing eldernymph, but you probably won't get an answer. If you don't, place an offering of food at the base of the tree. If the food rots, do not take from the tree. If the food is eaten and there is a gift in its place, then you may take from the tree. When encountering an Eldernymph, assuming you haven't done anything to offend the forest, their default demeanor is motherly.
Brightling/DarklingDetails
ChangelingYou are a young faerie who, for some reason or other, was left with human parents to raise. Why? Perhaps your birth mother died in childbirth and the family couldn't bare to keep you. Perhaps your birth mother didn't believe she was fit, so she gave you up. Perhaps you were left in the cradle of a kidnapped human baby for sinister reasons. These details are up to the player, or they may be left vague; some Changelings never find out why they were left with the humans. The true faerie nature is also up to the player. Cait Sidhe, Hag, Nymph, etc., it's up to you. The advantage and disadvantages you choose should be reflective of this, and picking them up over time represents your transition to a fully-fledged adult Sidhe. As of this moment, you may not even realize what you are yet. Until you do, you cannot use your faerie abilities such as Feth Fiada and Seeming. If you don't know what you are yet, then you don't know that you've been under a Seeming for your whole life! Keep in mind that other players (including any that have Feth Fiada themselves) might have Second Sight. You do as well! The reason you were left with humans, and the exact type of faerie you are, is up to you. Finding out what you are might be part of your story, or maybe you know already. You may "unlock" your own racial abilities when it feels fitting to do so, or start out with them fully functional.

Things the fae tend to like

  • In the forest, they like to rest in Alder trees, or dance beneath them.
  • Most of them love apples, so they make excellent peace offerings.
  • Apples are delicious and lilacs smell amazing.  Both of these things are also true for extremely attractive mortals.
  • If you eat a lot of poppyseed, you might share dreams with a faerie.
  • Lilac, they really like the smell, but there's no compulsive effects.
  • Some fae are suckers for attractive mortals.
