Zain's father was a guard, in charge of security for House Voclain, one of the prominent families in Avalan. As a kid, he had a knack for sneaking into places he wasn't supposed to be, finding nooks and crannies in the manor that no one else knew about or could fit through. When he was just twelve years old, he found his way into a secret treasure room and touched a Vathian crystal that the Voclain family had been illegally storing for many years. This would have normally led to a death sentence, but there was a terrible illness passed down through much of the Voclain family, and they'd been hoping that a black mage would be able to help them cope with it.
Zain was immediately sent to Arcane University at Ivora to get trained with the Templars of Dusk. He spent his teenage and young adult years in Ivora, the Capitol of Tresk learning to use his abilities before returning home to serve the Voclains. His magic was kept as a jealously guarded secret. By day, Zain was a quiet servant who went everywhere his lord did for reasons unknown to outsiders. Lord Voclain was a cruel and ruthless leader, quick to execute those that defied him. By night, Zain collected bits lifeforce to keep the Voclain malady at bay, taking it from prisoners, enemies of the House, commoners wanting to make a few coins, as well as illegal mages he was ordered to find and put down himself.
Now, Lord Voclain had four children. The eldest was a young woman named Rosalie, followed by a young man by the name of Evarn, his heir. Zain was in love with Rosalie and had been for years, but his clandestine advances had been met with an assertion that his friendship would forever be held close to her heart. Their lives and her family's image would never allow anything between them anyways, and so they maintained their close friendship for several years. Zain didn't know, but Rosalie had taken a secret lover, a stable hand. The way Zain found out about this twisted his stomach more than anything else he'd seen in service to house Voclain. It was an order to attempt an abortion on Rosalie's unborn child and execute her lover. It saddened Zain to kill the man, even though he was jealous that this stable hand had gotten something he'd been wanting for years, but he asserted that his magic could not abort an unborn child without risking the life of the mother and refused to try.
He was actually fairly certain his magic could do the deed, but he decided then and there that this was a line he would not cross. The next day, Rosalie all-too-conveniently somehow managed to fall down the stairs and die in what was said to be a very unfortunate and untimely accident. Zain would have killed Lord Voclain if he felt he could get into his quarters in the middle of the night without getting caught, but decided it was too much of a risk and opted for the heir instead... That very night, Evarn was stabbed in his sleep and Zain fled the country.

Languages: Lombarse, Treskan, Ascelic
Strengths: sneakiness, being subtle, getting into places he's not supposed to be
Weaknesses: Zain's body has an addiction to excess lifeforce and he feels weak without it. However, he does his best not to indulge and won't take from someone who hasn't wronged him. Zain feels he's been made to do evil and wants to do good, but isn't sure what that means, which may lead him to moments of indecision or hesitation.
Physical Capabilities: Zain is skilled with hand-to-hand combat and mainly uses daggers.
Zain is a Vathian Mage (Black Magic) and his crystal is embedded into his hand, which is typically gloved.

Zain has scars on his body from times that he's had to take on the injuries of those wealthier and more powerful than himself and wasn't able to heal right away. His age is difficult to guess by looking at him because giving up his own lifeforce has aged him at times, but having access to excess has also made him vibrant at others.
