#18 Way Too Many Quests

Location: Blingdenstone

just before reaching the city, Sarith and Jorlan disarm and remove their armor

  • they explain that Blingdenstone is currently recovering from a war with Menzoberranzan, so drow will not be well-received

8 guards question the party on who they are and what brings them here

  • Topsy & Turvy vouch for them, including the drow, and the party is escorted inside

the city has a totally different feel from the rest of the Underdark; it's warm, welcoming, and hospitable

  • even the mood of the guards shifts as they welcome the party to the city and tell them where everything is located

Party visits market first, shops for some ✨bling, and asks around for Kazook Pickshine

  • Kazook accepts the goods from Werz Saltbaron and rewards the party with spell gems
  • Jimjar and Kazook are old friends, and Kazook is surprised to see him return to the city

an alarm goes off as a guard is suddenly engulfed by a gelatinous cube

  • Party rescues him and defeats the slime, but not before Skjorn eats some of it and gets sick
  • the guard explains that the city has been dealing with a slime problem lately
  • Party theorizes that a Demon Lord may be involved; the guard suggests they talk to the king & queen

Party enters Diggermattock Hall and immediately mentions demons; they're directed to a private room in the back

  • Dorbo & Senni Diggermattock introduce themselves and listen to the party's warnings
    • they happen to recognize Mylz as a famous hero and decide to believe the party
  • Jimjar peeks out from behind the party and Dorbo groans; they're not on good terms

Dorbo offers to help the party reach the Surface if they first help their citizens with various problems; they simply can't spare anyone to guide them right now

  • Senni asks them to investigate what is influencing the slimes and report back any information
  • Senni also informs them about a wererat clan that has taken over part of the city and won't respond to any attempts to parley; perhaps they'll speak with outsiders?

begin quest: Investigate the Oozes & Parley with the Wererats

Party gets a quick look at the area they'll investigate later, and a group of guards ask what they're up to

  • after hearing about the party's quests, the guards warn that there's a medusa past this tunnel
  • if the party happens to come across it, they are to let the guards know its location so they can prepare to confront it

begin quest: Slay the Medusa

Party stops by the inn, the Foaming Mug, to take a breather and drop off non-combatants

  • innkeeper Tappy Foamstrap excitedly greets them and asks to hear about their entire adventure so far, offering free food & drink in exchange
  • the taproom is lively with other gnomes who listen attentively and fully plan to share with the rest of the city (gossip spreads fast here)

after story time, the party floats around and gets their fill of local rumors

  • Skjorn hears that the city is struggling with violent ghosts leftover from the war
  • Zaz learns about Ogrémoch's Bane, a sentient magic cloud that is turning the city's earth elementals into its slaves; it dwells in an area called Rockblight

the next day, the party notices a circle of statues where a few gnomes are communing with the stones

  • Gurnik Tapfinger introduces himself as head priest of Callarduran Smoothhands, god of stone and mining
  • the statues are ancient stone guardians and manifestations of their god
  • Gurnik explains they are members of the Stoneheart Enclave, the religious spellcasters who defend the city

Gurnik asks how many in the party are religious, then appeals to them to cleanse a desecrated temple in Rockblight

  • he gives the party gems to insert into a statue at the temple, and warns them that they'll have to fight off servants of Ogrémoch's Bane once they're activated
  • he also mentions some trouble at another temple in Inner Blingdenstone, though he doesn't know the details

begin quest: Cleanse the Temple

Party heads to the wererat warrens, which are blocked off by guarded doors; they are hesitantly let through

  • Zaz triggers a trap while trying to disarm it and 4 wererats appear with intent to fight
  • Dibrael and Skjorn gain their trust by turning into rats; the wererats take the party to their leader

Chipgrin, chief of the Goldwhisker Clan, introduces herself

  • Chipgrin says the wererats have been fighting off oozes constantly and they're considering leaving the deep gnomes to fend for themselves
    • the gnomes abandoned the city during the war with Menzoberranzan and she considers them cowards who are now coming back to take over her territory
  • Chipgrin knows everything about who is behind the slimes, a man they have been calling the Pudding King
    • she is willing to take the party to the Pudding King, but only after they arrange a meeting with the Diggermattocks for her
  • Chipgrin recognizes Topsy & Turvy as fellow wererats and offers them a place in the clan; they accept

Party leaves and arranges a meeting between Chipgrin and the Diggermattocks, scheduled tomorrow

update quest: Parley with the Wererats

Party visits the temple in Inner Blingdenstone

  • an overwhelmed priest directs them to the catacombs, claiming they're haunted

in the catacombs, Jadger introduces himself as an elite soldier who died in the war; he openly shows his dislike for Sarith and Jorlan

  • Jadger will reign in the other ghosts if the party agrees to put some particularly violent ones to rest
    • Vazuk is terrorizing families trying to move into his old home in the residential area; his specter must be destroyed
    • Udhask is haunting Rockblight; his remains must be brought to the catacombs and laid to rest

begin quest: Lay Ghosts to Rest

Party speaks with the locals in the residential area and finds what used to be Vazuk's house

  • they destroy the specter shortly after

Party enters Rockblight, where echoes of battling can be heard

  • a ghost appears, attempting to frighten them; they're startled, but unaffected
  • after fighting the ghost, he leads them to his remains, which they collect
